Weight Training v Plyometrics

    Can anyone outline the benefits in each? I play a lot of sport and was just wondering which is more beneficial. I'd imagine for building strength you should probably build a base by doing weights and then incorporate plyometrics into your training schedule?
    Can plyometrics be applied in season instead of weight training for maintaining strength?

    It's not a case of either/or. Plyometrics are great for a lot of sports so I'd use them along with weight training. A huge amount of sports people do

    Would in season be a different story though? I'd imagine weight training is much more beneficial in season as you are maintaining strength whilst less likely to burn out? Am I wrong here? My guess is that pilates with weight training whilst also training a few more times a week will be very hard on the body

    Don't think of it as weight training = strengthening muscles, plyometrics = bit of fannying about with some sports-related function. Plyometrics strengthen muscles in a completely different way. There aren't really in-season and out-of-season exercises given what the sports you do. It's a bit like if I didn't play squash during soccer's off season.

    Plyos (read jumping, be it bilaterally or unilaterally) are excellent for development of strength in ligaments and tendons, start off gently with single hops, progress to multiple hops, move on to single leg hops, and eventually on to box jumps and drop jumps (reactive box jumps)

    Weight training in season should be part of the overall programme but shouldn't be the main focus, game performance should be.

    Plyometrics are great because they will increase speed and explosiveness. By combining both methods of training throughout the year once the programme is managed properly will give great gains and prevent injury. Technique is essential in plyometrics
