Pins - get them outta me!!!

    Hi all,

I broke my leg quite badly about two years ago when I was travelling and had 22 pins put in to stick me back together. The surgeon in Kuala Lumper said that the pins would stay in for ever, but I have heard more and more conflicting advice on the subject, so I have more or less decided to have out with them.

The problem is I don't have the first clue where to start with getting them out. Who do I call to set up such an operation? I think I'll probably go private but I'm not sure which hospital would be best. I'm living in Kerry, so I imagine I'll have to travel for it.

Any advice or opinions on the matter are more than welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

Oh, and if anyone could suggest a more suitable forum to post this thread I'd be happy to do so, I had a look around but couldn't find one.

If only there were people in Ireland who had gone to medical school and were qualified to answer this kind of thing.

Correct sir, After hours was the correct choice - have you tried a large magnet of some type? You could fine one at your local scrapyard.

    We are here to help.

Your GP would be the best place to start, and they'll be able to put you in touch with a consultant. Where you go from there will be up to yourself and the consultant.

I got my steel pins put in at 22 up in the Cappagh Hospital in Dublin to fix a click hip and I was told too that they would be supposed to do me for life. That was about 15 years ago, and I'm due soon to get them out and get a full hip replacement done in Croom Hospital in Limerick as soon as the consultant gets my medical records from the Cappagh to find out how they put the pins in.

I don't know how that'd work in your particular situation given that you had the original operation done abroad, but the fact you're now living in Kerry means you could opt to have the operation done in Cork.

Leave them in for a long time.. The femur is crazy thick for a reason.

It might be easier to just put some pins in your other leg, just to balance things out a bit.

Have you tried a homeopathy remedy?
Cheaper and more successful than those 'modern' surgical procedures.

Having pins in isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's just that you should try to get your pins-to-needles ratio back in line. My advise would be to to jab yourself with 22 needles and leave them in there until the pins are removed.

What conflicting evidence have you heard? And was it told to you by medical professionals or just random lads online and around the place, because unless its legitimate medical advice, or the pins are genuinely negatively impacting your life then I dont see why you would get them removed.

Also, your GP is always the first port of call for health issues.

Record prices for commodities at the moment. Arrange a meeting with your local scrap merchants (often see in a Hiace van) and see what they'll offer you for the leg.

Huh? Can he not read a fuckin' Xray? They'll be the black lines in it.

    I'd rethink that guy.

Get yourself a metal detector to find where the pins are exactly, then very precisely, hack that leg off. Extra medical points if you use a rusty spoon for the hackin' part.

I'm somewhat relieved you won't be doing the operation Mads! :D

    Spot the pins -

There's actually 7 pins, but only 3 are visible in that X-ray because it's only a 2D image.

Just speak with your local GP and ask for their expertise. If they need to, they will refer you to another Doctor/Surgeon.

    Hope you feel better soon,

/In my own situation, a referral letter was sent to a NeuroSurgeon for their advice & expertise. Still waiting on treatment plan for a fracture in my lower spine and loosing patience by the day,

but your first port-of-call should be to your GP anywhoo :)

Hope that helps in some way,

What, you mean like sticking pins in him?

My bad. I guess taking another Xray or using an MRI is out of the question.

First of all you head for Lidl next Thursday. You start with this baby, I'm pretty sure these will remove them, fill any unsightly holes with this and then for the perfect finish.

Sit in the bath of water for a few weeks and rust them out of ya. Simples!

I dunno much about it Mads tbh, I mean, the pins aren't supposed to be magnetic, yet they set off scanners the whole time, so I'd say that's why they'd be reluctant to stick me in an MRI machine... magnets, big, big magnets! :pac:

    Hey everyone,

Thanks for the help. I've since followed various people's recommendations and talked to my GP, who reckon's I'll be mad to go private, so he's writing a letter to a surgeon in Kerry General Hospital. He think's I'll be a low priority case though, which is fair enough, don't expect to be getting in ahead of critical trauma patients. Might see if he'll make me taller while he's at it.

I had a look in Lidl and have got all the tools just in case I need to resort to Plan B. Thanks a million for all your comments, I enjoyed them. That video with the MRI was a bit nuts, though!

Thanks again, I'll be back in a year or so to let you know how it goes ;)

DIY. There are plenty of YouTube videos detailing how to carry out the procedure yourself. The told and equipment required are all readily available from specialized stores such as Aldi and Lidl.
