The time I went to Limerick, there was a lot of messing about at Red Cow and we were 45 minutes late by the time we got to Limerick.

The time I was going to Portlaoise we were 30 minutes late.

I've always got the Dublin Coach from Red Cow and it's always been more or less on time (that said, I've never been on it at rush hour). Got it the opposite way once to Westmoreland St - the bit from Red Cow to Westmoreland Street took ages. Just depends on traffic, I guess.

I'm a regular bus traveller from Dublin to Limerick (and back).
Dublin Coach is the cheapest, and 90% of the time the bus hits Annacotty bang on time (2.5 hours on average). The bus stops at Red Cow and Kildare Village for a few minutes each, but it's motorway from Red Cow - Annacotty. The longest delay I've experienced has been between Kildare Village and Red Cow heading towards Dublin due to traffic on the motorway being at a standstill, think it was an hour late getting to Dublin that evening. The regular coaches are very comfortable, the double deckers less so as the heat upstairs can be stifling. The wifi is seriously crap.

Bus Eireann bus 12 has something like 15 stops between Busaras and Annacotty and takes 3 hours 45 mins according to the timetable (for a main route which can take just over 2 hours in a car, this is too long imo). 12X Express Bus Eireann stops after Busaras are Heuston, Red Cow, Newlands Cross, Portlaoise and Nenagh before reaching Annacotty. This bus still takes 3 hours 15 minutes.

JJ Kavanagh also have a service between the cities. This service has 10 stops between Dublin & UL, and takes 2 hours 50 mins from the timetable:

From the three services, it's Dublin Coach for me.

If you are going to make comparisons it would be nice if you made some effort to be accurate.

    What is not accurate?

    seems accurate enough to me?

BE 12 and JJ Kavanagh services take an almost identical route, BE only serve Red Cow and Kavanaghs only Kildare. From Portlaoise to Limerick both use the Old N7 throughout. They will both take roughly the same length of time. Kavanaghs timetable gives 3h10, Be 3h15 NOT the 2h50 versus 3h45 comparison cee-jay posted that gave the impression that one service was nearly an hour slower than the other.

BE X12 has 2 diversions off the M7 (Portlaoise and Nenagh) whereas Dublin Coach have 1 (Kildare). Both give 2h45 running times on their timetables, In reality as those 2 diversions are longer the X12 should be around 10-15 minutes slower not the 45mns cee-jay has said.

It would appear that cee-jay used the departure times for the 12/X12 from Dublin Airport rather than Dublin city centre!

And then randomly gave journey times to either Limerick City, UL or Annacotty to completely muddle the facts.

Just off the Dublin Coach 5.45 Westmorland St. to University service. It was more than 30 mins late. This is the third time I've gotten Dublin Coach and it has never gotten me home on time. I understand rush hour traffic is heavier but why do they advertise a 2.5 hr travel time if they have no hope of achieving it.

You're leaving Dublin in rush hour-it's not going to get you to UL in 2.5 hours. The train would be the only guarantee if you want to avoid rush hour traffic in the quays in Dublin & Naas Road

Unless theres a few stray cows on the line, then the only way is private jet to Shannon.

Hey I get that. What I don't get is why they advertise a 2.5 hour journey time even though they won't achieve it.

I've used Dublin Coach before on a Friday afternoon and a Saturday evening, both journeys to and from UL were spot on with arrival times. I'd say it really does depend on the traffic, but the 2 and a half hour journeys are very feasible to achieve in average traffic. For a tenner each way you can forgive them for a few extra minutes' journey if it happens and the crappy wifi.
