Well, they could mitigate the damage by getting MiiVerse on to 3DS pronto - pretty much the same functionality or better (if you include the ability to type in text) - plus they can monitor it.

Also, I presume that's across the board, not just NoA?

If people used parental settings better it would help but Nintendo can't make people any more intelligent.

Can't be a well renowned family friendly company and then allow unsolicited offensive stuff to be transmitted by its systems.

Nintendo were never going to do anything different for fear of Daily Mail type rage. It is like opening a nut with a sledge hammer but the media become so offended, so fast, companies have to act straight away. Maybe in time if they can work out filters they will bring it back.

Daily Mail type people will always find a way to spin anything, even this will probably be in their newspaper as "a worrying report where it was revealed that many children used nintendo's swap note application to send lewd images to one another".
It's better to leave them do what they want, ruining a service for everyone doesn't help, like when they tried to make me as an adult only be allowed to view or buy 18+ games on their eshop for 3 hours a day.

I completely agree, but this decision is totally consistent with how Nintendo operate, and they were never really going to just let it lie.
