Toyota Hiace - brake grinding

Don't know if this is the right place to post.

    Model: toyota hiace
    Year: 2004

Got a scare with my van recently. 2 weeks ago I had to brake pretty hard. Nothing crazy but just harder than normal. Anyway, I heard a godawful crunching sound from the brakes which scared the life out of me. This happened after a long drive of about 2 hours. I could feel a little grinding when I applied the brakes for the rest of my journey, but they still were stopping me fine. The next morning I went for a test drive and tested the brakes, etc, but nothing! As there were no more problems I just thought something got caught somewhere and then fell out or something.

This morning the same sound happened again, again after a long drive only and a pretty hard brake. Don't think it's the abs as again, a smaller version of the sound happened every time I applied the brakes to the end of the journey. Went for a test drive this evening and all seems fine.

I'm gonna take it to a mechanic as soon as I can but I was wondering if any of you had any ideas?

    Thanks.

Pads and discs on front maybe

Mechanic would be able to tell quickly at a glance once wheels are off.

Probably the pads have worn down a bit and the discs have a 'lip' - when you apply the brakes hard the metal part of the pad could be contacting the 'lip' on the disc and causing the crunching sound .
Will be easy to spot with wheels off .
