All, i would be delighted for your views on what would be a good purchase in Jan. Ideally i would like to get mazda 6 (trade my current '12 mazda 6) but new model seems very expensive...was quoted €15k today for sport and €18,750 for sport se (i was expecting to pay about €2k less). Is hyundai i40 a good alternative? I do not like passat / insignia / avensis. Any idea when new mondeo is due out? Any other good alternative of similar type car? I need room for 2 toddlers...boot space is important for buggys etc.

I had an i40 Tourer auto in the UK for a few days recently. Nice car, but I wouldn't take it over a Passat or Avensis. Haven't driven the new 6, but going by the old one I'd hazard a guess the i40 would be a fair step back.

I'd have one over an Avensis all day long.

Passat, im not so sure about....

Nah, the Avensis is a more comfortable. The i40 is a bit more user friendly on the auto hold and parking brake side of stuff. All 3 run circles round your average Insignia though, I'm looking forward to see what Opel have done on the mechanical side with the facelift.

Mazda 6 is the nicest saloon on the market at the moment. But 20 grand to come up two years from what you have ( a good looking car too) is absolutely crazy.

Whats with the newer cars like the mazda 6 and mondeo trying to copy aston Martins. I'm not complaining though, for those of us that can't afford an aston :pac: I'm loving the look of that new Mazda, dare i say it.... even more than my mondy

Isn't the cheapest diesel in the 6 something like nearly €32k?

There is a petrol for about €29k, but it will be saleproof even though it is in motor tax band B (so only €270 a year) and incredibly fuel efficient for a petrol engine that size (even What Car's true mpg showed that in the heavier and less fuel efficient CX5, the true mpg of the CX5 petrol is 41.3 mpg and the true mpg of the diesel is 47.2 mpg, so you can be sure in a lighter and more aerodynamic 6, it will do even better than 41.3 mpg in the real world).

Also the petrol model is a little basic; even the cheapest diesel comes with climate control, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers and parking sensors - none of which are standard in the petrol model.

That's the way Mazda and others market Ireland, Very annoying but it seems we only drive diesels here:cool: If you look at their UK website, there are a lot more petrol configurations and options.

Thanks to every1 for replies...i can see that general thought is mazda6 is by far the best option.

Maybe the mazda garage i attended yesterday (not my local garage as i wanted an idea of what might local garage might ask before going there) was having a bad day as sales man did not even offer me a drive in new 6 and he thought my '12 had a 2.0 diesel. I will have to shop around more to see if this will be a true reflection of what trade in price will be....i'm hoping he was about €2k too high!

I would consider a Kia Optima as an alternative to the i40, I would also consider the 6 to be way ahead of both in every department. Have you checked out a Honda Accord too?

There is a cheaper 6 on the way. Executive model coming in just under 30k, but it's low spec and really just a price point - they don't expect to sell many.

Sport will be renamed executive SE, sport SE will become Platinum.

I'd go Mazda 6 Sport / exec SE - massive improvement over the old model.

If you fancy Nav, cost of that is coming down from 995 to 650.

If you fancy nav, haggle it into the deal. and haggle an extra 2 years extended warranty.

FFS, the Yanks will have had it for nearly 3 years at that stage.

i think the 6 is fantastic to look at...drove one and it was really good aswell but price wise was a bit pricey

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

It's a crazy amount of money for what it is. I briefly looked into pricing on one and while it didn't suit my needs anyway I was looking at the bones of 20k with a two year old older model for an equivalent spec.

In saying that it's the best looking car in that class and that engine is a cracker.

the wagon is available in Sport spec with the petrol engine
its the one i would go for if i was changing my current estate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 tuamroadgalway

The 6 estate is a lovely looking machine. if boot space is important get an estate. Some are better looking than others, 6 is nicest imho, a4/a6, v70, accord nice too.
Do not touch an i40, thay have all the bling but brutal car, wild heavy on diesel.

Do you have figures to base this on? I have a 2012 i40 UK Style model (136ps).
It is returning on average, an indicated 58 - 62 mpg (70% Motorway 30% Urban). With a 70 liter tank, the range is greater than 800 miles.

In terms of driving dynamics, the i40 is poor enough, great on the motorway but not so good on b-roads. I went from a gti to the i40 so maybe i'm being a little harsh.

OP, what about a new Octavia VRS?

Octavia is from the segment below the 6 though. It's not that pretty either imo.

True, it is in the segment below, but I think it represents better value for money given the spec, engine and space provided. I don't think it looks that bad in VRS form either.

For fuel figures on i40, I have posted all details in other threads, based on dozens of actual measurements rather than computer. Click on my username if you want details.

Mazda 6- Nice petrol 2.0. 145 bhp and the same specs for petrol and diesel + petrol 3k cheaper that diesel - at last Ireland gets back to normal! :-)

Not really unfortunately; in the case of the saloon, the petrol engine is a lower trim than the cheapest diesel, so it's not really a direct comparison on prices. The petrol will also be absolutely saleproof, the fact that it is so cheap to tax (for a petrol engine) will be totally overlooked by the average motorist - all they want is a diesel regardless of whether or not it might suit their needs.

That is one good thing about the UK, buyers are much more likely to do the sums and see what engine might be suitable for them. Only 50% of cars in the UK are diesel, and it shows; granted you won't see too many of them, but you will see cars as big as a 3 series, C-class, A4 etc with petrol engined. They also don't buy the least powerful possible engine and lowest possible spec, plus they believe in the idea of servicing a car on time every time - a concept that is completely alien to many people in Ireland.
