I saw the best chipper in Cork thread and thought of the healthier option. Who does the best sandwich in Cork, for like lunchtime eats?

Im probably not the only one put I love a good sandwich:D

I'll throw out a couple of my favourites

Café Gusto Washington St - The Fly Bacon - chicken, bacon and honey Dijon mayo on sourdough bread, you need to stretch the mouth to get around this one.

Sandwich Stall English Market - If you can get there early enough there is a good choice, lovely fresh tasting baguettes and sandwiches. The smoked chicken is melt in your mouth.

Holy Grain Washington St - Beautiful crusty white bread make these sandwiches, the filling are pretty nice too, my one criticism is they fillings are a bit scant these days.

Sandwich Club - Reardens - This is new and was in there recently, had a BBQ pulled pork Sandwich, it was fairly nice but at €7.50 it was way too pricy (just aswell I didn't pay:P)

    Anyone else got some recommendations?

Or am I the only sandwich mad person in Cork?

Supervalue Blackrock do excellent sandwiches and rolls.

The Natural Food bakery (usually make my own spiced beef multi seed pitta with hummus, red onion, lettuce, gerkin and cider vinegar). Also really like Orso at the moment: chicken and cayenne pepper is my fav. These are different to what others mentioned.

Nash 19 and Perry Street Market Cafe for expensive but nice sandwiches also.

The Cork Reuben in the sandwich stall. Spiced beef with sauerkraut.

Mine would be the steak sandwich from boeuf-A-Lolo at the mahon point market. Haven't had it in a while bow that I have Thursday morning lectures.

Perry Street was nice alright the one time I was there. Nash always kinda disappoints me - had a pulled pork sandwich there a few weeks ago that was actually thin slices of pork, and nearly a tenner.

Market Lane do massive ones - the soup and half sandwich for 7.75 is a great deal. The Bookshelf do good sandwiches too, nice selection of bread.

They do, but half your lunchtime would be gone queueing.

Not cafe or pub sandwich, but the best sandwich i get while on the road is from Fitzpatricks shop glounthane

Fitzpatrick's is ridiculously overpriced and worth every penny. Their chicken sandwiches are gorgeous, breakfast rolls slow but worth waiting for, their "gourmet" sausage rolls are fantastic the cakes are fab. Fantastic caramel slices in particular.

The best sandwich I've gotten in Cork was in The Woodford. I really like sourdough bread.

Im sorry but Supervalue in Blackrock while grand is nothing special. Can anyone who thinks its "corks best" go a few minutes up the road and say its better then O'Driscolls?

In town id normally go to the long valley, brackens or to the half door.

Yeah I was using value as a metric. I think that for the money it's pretty damn good.

I'm not all that enamoured with paying €6/7 for a sandwich.

    where is O' Driscolls?

Well I hope that the food in the half door is better than the coffee - its nothing short of dish water

O'driscolls is half way along the ballinlough road. Great shop. We used to stop there to stock up on picnic stuff on the way to the beach as kids.

fitzpatricks in glountaune is another great shop. Their milli-fillies are the business.

have to go along with the long valley alright, the ham salad probably has half a pound of ham in it :) they will wrap them up to take away as well, if you want to take it back to work for lunch etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 349 ✭✭Jimmy Bottles

Supervalu in Blackrock use Brennans or the like for their sandwiches. They are truly awful. At least Supervalu in Grange use their own thick cut bread.

The Rendezvous Bar, Model Farm Road. Top class.

Haha I'm so glad you wrote that. My boyfriend wouldn't believe me when I told him that Cork people pronounce mille feuille like that :D.

The Natural Bakery Company behind Waterstones......lovely breads and fillings.(The best I've had in town in years)

There are doorstep sandwiches in Centra on Oliver Plunkett Street that are lovely also.

Quishes Super Value in ballincollig do very good rolls, not exactly a sanger tho. They use their own crusty rolls, fill them up good and their about €5 with a pint of milk!

Corned beef salad in the Long Valley. Get in before 12:30 too and you should be able to nab De Paper

all this long valley praise is new to me. Must check it out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 392 ✭✭Footoo

Another vote for cafe gusto. Their grilled chicken on toasted multiseed is a favourite of mine.

The spiced beef and sauerkraut in the sandwich stall in OEM is beautiful as well.

In terms of value for money nothing beats Ballintemple Stores. Homemade thick crusty white bread, really good quality meat and various fillings and generous size servings for €3 a pop.

Its been that way for ever. When I lived in London in the 90's there was a telly program about Cork for about half an hour every week and one of the shows was totally devoted to Long Valley sangers (and their long history of being legend). It was subtitled:eek:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,418 ✭✭✭✭rob316

I went to the long valley today and I was so disappointed. I got a toasted special and it was only fair. The bread was cremated, I ate it but it definitely wasn't worth €5.80, wont be going back there in a hurry.

Maybe I got the wrong item but it was a big let down :(

I always miss the soup & sandwich deal for €5 in Cissie Youngs when I'm away. Consitency at its finest!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,062 ✭✭✭Dixie Chick

Oh no rb316, that terribe! Ive only ever had fab ones, that's a real pity

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,528 ✭✭✭foxyboxer

    Brackens.

    "What can I get you"
    "Brown bread sandwich please"
    "Butter?"
    "Yes"
    "What would like on it?"
    "Ham, cheese, tomato please"
    "Ok?"
    "Thanks"

    :D

The sandwich was good, but the soup was icky packet stuff, wasn't it? Crazy salty and sometimes not even mixed properly. It's over a decade since I was there though, so things may have changed! :D

Can't understand why Centra on Oliver Plunkett Street is so popular. You ask for ham and you get a single slice.

Centra on Grand Parade will throw 3 slices, minimum into the same sandwich. Much, much better value.

I want a sandwich so bad now... From anywhere ha!
Brackens is my favourite though and Blackpool one is nicer than town :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,729 ✭✭✭Balmed Out

Didnt know there was a Brackens in Blackpool but yeah for a good cheap sandwich brackens cant be beaten. Pretty much the same as O'Briens but with better bread and half the price.
As for the Natural Food Bakery is it different in town then in Blackrock? Id get coffee and the odd cake or their delicous almond croissant every now and then but never impressed by the sandwiches and some staff get annoyed if you ask could they add a bit of cheese to a sandwich.

The one in Blackpool is across the road from the planet gym. It's unbelievable the bakery is on site there so bread is so so fresh !! Might get one today now haha :)

Speaking of sandwiches, I notice that O'Briens in Blackpool is gone. While I feel sorry for the staff there, I can't say I'll shed a tear for the owners. Charging €6.50 for a pathetically mean sized sandwich was't cool in 2006, and it certainly ain't cool now either. If the rest of the chain went the same way it would be no bad thing - O'Briens personifies Celtic Tiger greed. You would think the new owners would have copped that charging rip off prices was what caused to the chain to become insolvent the first time round.
