I am new to this and some of the PC build videos suggest that you use an anti-static wrist band while handling the computer components.
My parts should arrive next week sometime, so I am just trying to cover all bases before I get too excited when all the lovely packages arrive and just start ripping cardboard.

    Is it necessary?

its necessary alright. At least it is necessary to take precautions. I just take the earth pin from a plug and stick it in the earth socket. destroyed a hard drive once through static discharge so much more careful now.

In theory yes, in practice....I've never used one either privately and professionally and always been fine.

If you have one though, and you're building your own PC may as well use it to be on the safe side

You can always just touch the metal of your case to stat earthed. I bought one with my build because it was only 3euro, which was nothing in a 900€ budget!

    Ok so,

Cut out my washing machine power cable, unsheathe the ends, cello-tape one end to my forehead and the other to the case.

    Sorted.

    My DIY skillz are unmeasurable.

P.S. thank you for all the advice.

If you are assembling a pc and you don't have a wrist band . You can get around it by installing a psu with a built in off switch in the case first and plug it into the wall with the psu turned off .
