I'm doing a degree in computing. But after I finish the degree, how would I get into teaching computing in a PLC college?

You'd need to do a post grad in further education teaching (not sure what the official name is). Also check with the Teaching Council website to make sure your degree will qualify you.

If the PLC college is under an ETB, you will have to qualify and apply as if for a second-level teaching post.

I doubt any ETB would advertise for a IT job as it is a subject only offered in the Leaving Cert. Applied and no school has a big enough LCA cohort to need a full-time IT teacher.

The PLC colleges may have students at the moment, but they are always a temporary measure and the ETBs need to make sure they have staff they can re-use in the mainstream schools. The redeployments in the City of Dublin ETB (and others) this year showed that while people may be in a PLC college now, they could easily end up in mainstream if PLC numbers are cut again.

Yes you will have to apply and qualify but the criteria are different for further education (plc) jobs than second level.

If you did manage to secure a job (they're as scarce as everywhere else in education), you would be unlikely to be transferred to a second level school if you were only qualified to teach at a further education college, which you would be if you did the appropriate post grad.

(almost 20 years teaching computer studies in a further ed college)

Thanks for your replies. It's a long way away and I may even change my mind by then. I was just wondering how to get into it. It is a job I would like though.
