Joining a club / Cycling Ireland

Probably a very basic question but it's not clear to me: if I join my local club do I also need to get a CI license? That's the way it is with triathlon - join the club and also TI - and that's perfectly clear on the TI website but I can't find anything anywhere to that effect in regard to CI. Can anyone confirm?

BTW I realise that most memberships probably run from Jan-Dec (although again TI allow me to join a club now for 2014, including the remainder of 2013) so that's what I'm expecting - anything else is a bonus.

Most, if not all Clubs will require you to join CI as part of the membership rules, they may do it for you or get you to do it yourself. It won't be mentioned on the CI website as it's up to individual clubs to determine their own rules and licence requirements. To be sure ask the club you intend joining.

CI membership runs from jan 1st to dec 31st so if you join now you'll only get 2 months membership and will have to renew again in January.

So to participate in club spins from now to the end of the year, I guess I need to join. Think it's only €20 club + I guess €15 for introductory CI, so it won't break the bank. Just wanted to understand it all.

I'd say most clubs would sign you up for 2014 from now.

If you sign up now, it will last to the end of 2014, always has gone to the end of the following year if the AGM has past.

When you do join a club, is it to race or can you be part of the club to spin with a group in a non-competitive environment?

Either, there are no requirements for what cycling clubs can or must do. In fact, there is no requirement for a cycling club to be affiliated with cycling Ireland.

Yes, in order to race in cycling Ireland races you need a licence, and a licence may be beneficial or requested by other event organisers but that is separate.

    For me it'll be non-competitive.

Most clubs will have a touring or leisure group for club spins, unless of course you are naturally fast, these would be a good starting point as they are non competitive.

Just found this on the CI website:

"Applications for membership of Cycling Ireland are closed at the moment and will repopen on the 1st of November 2013 for the 2014 season. Licenses purchasaed from 1st November 2013 will be valid until the 31st December 2014.

Please note that all 2013 memberships, regardless of when purchased, will expire on the 31st December 2013.
