I have poor brakes on the left wheel and bad handbrake.

eventually today I Pulled off the drum and found (to my supprise) 2 "sets" of brake shoes/ liners, the inner set dosen't appear to move at all on pressing pedal but is well worn the outter set looks ok........why the need for 2 sets

I had to go in out of the dark.........

A lot of imported 135's have two sets of brake shoes these tractors were painted yellow and used for road use by the councils in England , one set of shoes were for the the hand brake the other for the foot brakes. Most of them were later re painted red and grey when they finished their life with the councils but the yellow colour will be seen underneath any chips or scratches on the red or grey paint

I have a 135 (MF 20 industrial) with the same brake set up and my local MF mechanic was always giving out about them. The left wheel brakes and the hand brake seem to need a lot of work to keep them working so is it a hard job to change it over to the standard agri brakes setup?

That's spot on , yellow under the paint, she is semi retired to me now and will only operate for a couple of weeks per year so I don't mind getting her right and keeping her right........she is a good straight tractor other than the brakes on that side...

Hey lads just to reopen this thread I am struggling to find the parts needed to restore my 1971 MF20 industrial brakes. I need new back plates for the the brakes on both sides , handbrake cable for both sides and all new sets of shoes both for the pedals and the handbrake? I am struggling to get the back plates and cables for the hand brake so if anyone on here has any experience or knows a source to look up, let me know or pm me please? I am restoring the tractor and want to keep it as original as possible so I don't want to go down the road of a conversion kit to the standard brakes!

    Thanks.

Yeah I have but no luck with my local dealer although he is trying to track down someone who could help and agriline weren't sure what part I needed exactly. Did you have any luck fixing the brakes in you Massey?

Mine was converted, only the outer shoes working, waiting for new retainers and springs......must ring them.

Id say a problem with the dual system was driving with the handbrake on???

Well luckily I have a very experienced retired MF mechanic to call on for advice and he reckoned that what happened was the handbrake and shoes would sieze if the tractor was left parked up for any length of time or if it was mainly doing field work as opposed to road work with heavy trailers which was what the heavy duty handbrake system was designed for!!
Also he said he saw quite a few that arrived here in Ireland in the early 80's that had the handbrake and shoes siezed so the outer shoes were adjusted/checked and they were painted and sold on with no working handbrake!! I would say your tractor had it's brake pedal shoes fixed so the tractor would stop but the handbrake was probably left siezed. The couple of MF 20 industrials I have seen converted with the conversion kit only have one set of shoes as per the agri spec MF135 but you have to go into the half axle to remove the extra rods for the handbrake and replace with the standard setup hence why you see many with just the brakes working and not the handbrake. It is a lot cheaper for a working tractor just to get new retainers and springs for the outer brake pedal shoes than to track down two set of shoes/cables/backplates or the heavy labour cost of the conversion kit!

Often when the foot pedal shoes wore down, the rods from the pedals were connected to the handbrake shoes operating levers instead. When these stopped working, you had nothing.
If you can, pick up a copy of "Classic Massey" magazine, you will find advertisements from all the Massey spare and reproduction parts suppliers. A surprising number of Irish advertisers, by the way.

    Thanks for the info Iver.

Was driving an industrial 135 today and brakes were weird.

With pedals locked toghether only the LH wheel locked but when they were seperated each brake locked the desired wheel..

Any ideas what may be wrong.

Also it was throwing up oil from the dipstick!!!
    Is this a serious problem!

    thanks for your help

    RH linkage/brakes need adjusting?

Oil up dipstick caused by too much crankcase pressure-possible worn rings or blocked breather??
