    Hello,
Currently driving a 00 avensis diesel, very reliable and fairly good on fuel(47-48 mpg)
Been thinking of coming up to a 08/09
I have heard people say that the newer Toyotas were not that great? what about VW, Skoda, but I think you will pick up a Toyota cheaper than other brands.
At the minute I would be inclined towards Volkswagen, but want to hear what you have to say.
What do you think of the following:
    Avensis, Passat, Octavia?
Just looking round on web, whats your view on this Passat model

I drove a 1.9 and thought a bit sluggish compared to avensis.

If you're looking toyota then the corolla is smaller than your current car inside (despite being bigger outside) and the avensis is considerably bigger.

Personally I'd get an 08-09 avensis 2.0 D-4D older model (new one came in 09 but still old models sold), the Luna runout model had nice bits like cruise control

That's mad money for a regular 09 diesel Passat, I guess Al will be leaving it in one of his fields at that price.

For not alot more you could have a CC:

    Thanks for your reply,
Would consider one of those, any views regarding reliability?

What about an Insignia, top spec Elite model that is 2 years younger for less money:

They're grand, its really the 2.2 that's the bad egg.
You hear the odd injector story but really not a lot.

I don't get the Mondeo thing tbh, I know they're good value but the interior is truly shocking.

Nope don't drive an Insignia, some of the early models had niggly problems but nothing major.

Ohh you've crossed the line!! I actually love the brushed metal in the older titaniums, but the newer facelift, with that dark grey around the radio doesnt appeal to me tbh.

Yeah but all the other plastics with the square plastic trims, glovebox from an Escort, awkward looking trim everywhere in fact

On poverty models, the window winders seem to be from the sierra.

As for the silver plasticky bits....

In fairness Colm some of the switch gear in the current Avensis is naff too. For example the electric mirror/window switches are carried over from a 1999 Avensis I had years ago. Not a fan of the current Mondeo myself but I can see their appeal.

Fair enough the glove box holds about the manual and sod all else and the silver plastic radio and surrounding area chips off like there's no tomorrow, But the dashboard feels quality and the side silver strip on the front doors of zetec trims and above has to be nice. Granted the Lx spec is substandard but as they increase in spec they improve considerably looks wise. Sure everyone to their own i suppose, even my oul fella hated the look of it first, but I have him converted

Ohh I almost forgot, the best part is that you get an english broad as the voiceover :pac:

To be fair, the mirror switch on the 99 avensis is completely different as are the window switches.

The mirror switch has a toggle switch for left right, the old one has a slider, they also look a good bit different.

the window switches on the old one were big chunky mechanical switches that clicked back into place when going auto up/down, new ones are electronic switches.

Seems a bit finicky pointing that out but it was a specific point made.

If you're looking at Octavias they are in a class below. People think they are the class above but they're not. They're a Golf with a bit of sheet metal over the back. A superb is worth looking at. Comfy, space, good quality cabin and spec if you can get over the looks.
