Then / Now - 'tribute' cars

So many manufacturers have 'tribute' cars - the 'New' Beetle, 'New' Mini, 'New' Defender, designed to dent your pocket :(

Got me to thinking about having a 1 old/1 new collection - 1 old and 1 modern runabout in the style of the old one, all for under €3k ;) and with cheapish tax

    I'd start with -

    2CV, and C15/Berlingo/Multispace - both economical / spacious

    R4, and Express / Kangoo

    Beetle, and Lupo/Fox

    Mini, and Wagon R

    BL convertable (Sprite/Spitfire), and MX5 / Copen / Figaro

    old Merc, and E190 1.8

    old BMW. and 316

Range Rover Classic, and SJ410 /Jimny

Forget about saving the planet (new = low Co2 ??), save your hard earned first

I for one can't stand " tribute cars ". There was a time I suppose I taught they were cool but now I think they are lazy design showing absolutely no forward thinking, maybe with the exception of the new mini range which is trying to develop the linage somewhat. Does anybody think that the new beetle or fiat 500 will ever be as desireable as the originals?

well the beetle and 500 are cop outs as they deviate from the original too far by being front engined front drive, without even starting in the watercooled issue.

however I do like the look of the camaro, seems to be keeping true to the original styling cues whilst being a modern looking car.

don't start me on the charger tho, what an abomination

Yeah I kinda taught the same about the mustang when it came out too and in fairness it is still a lot better than any of the previous 20 years worth of mustangs but I think sports cars especially are supposed to be pushing the envelope a bit, I wasn't around when bill Mitchell's sting ray was wowing crowds but I'd imagine they were way more impressed and curious than the people who saw the Camaro concept unveiled, it is pretty tho it has to be said.

I reckon the new Fiat 500 Abarth will be a hugely collectable car in years to come. I do like them, but my missus hates them so I doubt there will ever be one on the driveway

The beetle was a huge marketing ploy, with no sense of the original except for vague shape resemblance.

I do think a lot of effort went into the Mini to make it 'feel' like the original - it does handle, and it is the type of car that begs you to drive it hard. It does miss out on some of the 'Rawness' of the original but that's just progression. I would own a modern Mini but it would have to be a Cooper S or something on the special side.

That little Suzuli would be cheap motoring as long as there was no rot on it!;)

The problem I have withe the new Mini is that it's, well, not very Mini!

The Fiat has got a bit pudgy too.

The latest "New" Beetle has been so rounded off that it hardly bears any resemblance to the icon.

Oh not really a matched pair but I think I would go for an R4 and a Twingo.

    @ Do-More - you make a good point, a picture says 1000 words

I wonder what cars of today will be icons in 50 years time? Its hard to see many of the mass produced crap-boxes rolling off the production lines today being iconic in any era

i'd say some cars define their eras like the merc W126 is the eighties, or the bmw e36 is a quintessential 90's machine.

however much lke today, it will be a case of 'my da drove one' or something we have softspots for.

the r31 skyline and the nissan blue bird, flat ritmos and ford escorts, along with the mark one laguna and mondeo.

the sierra sapphire and the renault 21

and of course the carina e and mid 90's corollas

These pics paint a thousand words of course but every car has well outgrown cars of twenty years ago.

A case in point for example is a W126 and a new Passat. Back in the day the W126 was a BIG, HEAVY car but it is narrower, not as tall, lighter than a current Passat. I didnt believe it until I put the two together, got the books out and checked!

I love the new 500 cuz they are just cool ....

I doubt any of those " retro " cars will ever be collectable, I reckon the focus rs it's aggressive and rare enough I also think the renault avantime will be sought after but I'm biased a bit on that as ones my new daily, we could all end up bieng surprised tho as I've recently been pining for a corolla ke 70!

Bearing in mind that the Mondeo is the evolution of the mk1 Cortina, its interesting to compare the fiesta specs to the mk1 Cortina....
