Cant open the link but assuming its a 1.6 valvematic which is very reliable, powerful for what it is and reasonably economical too.

Get a strata if you can

    Does this link work?

It's the second cheapest petrol 2011 Avensis on carzone, the cheapest being a lower spec red Aura model with nearly twice as many miles so price seems about right given the spec and mileage. A safe bet if she does very low mileage.

Only reservation id have is the colour, cant see it as my phone wants to view Toyotas mobile site. I think there was a non metallic purple on them that wasnt that nice

Yeah it's a pretty nasty colour actually. They look much better in Black or maybe Silver. The search continues!

I have an 03 avensis myself (the model before that one). I actually like the colour. You will get mid to high 40s in terms of mpg and they are very reliable. I wouldnt rule that one out.

I've driven these extensively, and the most you'll get from one is 39-40 mpg. Best I ever managed from a Mk2 Avensis (1.8) was 42 mpg, and that was driving like a total granny. 35-38 mpg is realistic in mixed driving, very hard to get more than that. The gearing is too short at higher speeds, the 1.6s drink fuel on the motorway. The 1.8s are better because they have more power and run at lower revs. The trip computer overreads by about 10%, so I wouldn't place any faith in what it says if that's what you're using as the basis for stating the car's fuel consumption.

The Mk3 has a six speed gearbox, so should deliver a few more mpg on the motorway than the (five speed) Mk2. It will be a much better choice than a diesel one for anyone who does a lot of town driving. 132 bhp is a lot for a 1.6, it won't be winning any races, but it's better than some 1.8s (including the 1.8 in the Mk2 model), so it should be just about enough.

The mk3 is lighter on fuel , but I wouldn't be expecting 45mpg though.

I have got 44 - lads here have reported getting 47. The new engine is more efficient.
It is here as 43.5 but you could beat that.

Thanks for the input lads. The car will probably do about 6-7,000Km a year and will be mostly short 20 minute trips to work and back so the 1.6 with anywhere around 40-45mpg should do the trick.

The auld lad has the mk2 1.6 and I thought it just about powerful enough (my 1.3 94 corolla can keep up with it to 60mph!).

Back to the colour! Any other opinions on it? I am yo-yoing on whether I like it or not!

You need to see the colour in the flesh, not shined up.

I meant to say it to you OP. I have driven this model avensis and it has a lot more power and handles better than my car.

I believe there is no manual 1.8 in the mk3 at least not here.

There is a 1.8 but it is the luna spec and is over 35K so they are almost non existent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭ofcork

Yeah but its auto only iirc.

I think you are thinking of the 2.2 DCAT diesel engine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭ofcork

I think the petrol 1.8 is defo auto at least when I was looking at potential buys online they were all multidrive as Toyota call it.

    aaah thats what MD is

Yeah not sure how good or bad it is maybe colm knows more,in the uk you can get even manual 2.0 petrols course nobody wants them here.

Most of the 1.8 autos sold here would probably have been rental cars at some stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Nobody really bought 1.8 new models here. There are a few on sale in the Dublin dealers though.

The multidrive is a CTV box, think it was 7 speed
There was a regular 6 speed torque convertor box on the 2.2 diesel.

The 1.6 valvematic wasn't far off the old model 1.8 in power and the strata spec was almost identical to the old model luna spec so it would be natural that drivers of the old 1.8 luna went for 1.6 stratas (that's if they didn't go diesel)

Silver and anthracite(grey) are the two best colours in these. Black isn't great either aukd lads is black and looks fairly meh.

Lip spoilers on them look well also.

The pinky red maroon colour looks good on them. A surprising one is the dark (fir?) green colour, did a strata one with the chrome lower grille, sills and rear garnish and it genuinely looked great.
