Had a fellow that I never met before call to look at cattle Looked at cattle and made a deal. Was writing the cheque and told me to load up the cattle . Wasn't to impressed when I told him he could collect the cattle when the cheque cleared. He got in to his jeep and drove off Would any of ye chance the cheque , I certainly wasn't Going to chance it even though the man seemed legit

Is the deal still on after he drove off ?
Deffo better safe than sorry sure he should be happy with you feeding them for another few days . Won't you have to wait for movement payment in any case ?

No deal is off just drove off. Could have moved them online but I wasn't moving anything till I was sure I was paid for them . If it was me I would be very happy buying cattle that we're going to be fed for a week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,313 ✭✭✭✭Sam Kade

I bought cattle private a few times what the seller normally does is keep the movement permit until the money clears.

You might be aswell off , he sounds fairly flighty if he took offence to waiting for the cheque to clear/bounce :D
I've never been caught like that but some people certainly have , its better to have a deal end this way rather than no money in your account or cattle in the shed

You were dead right lad, something fishy when the deal was off as soon as you questioned the cheque. Fair play to ya charityboy

    Same here.
Cattle I the yard until cheque clears. Or they can bring cash.

If they're offended - so be it. Business is business.
Better them offended than the cheque bouncing over the shed and the cattle god knows where.

if he was gone the minute you mentioned you wanted to clear the cheque first then you are best without him. As a buyer I would be suspicious if someone wants to clear a cheque first as the cattle could be gone along with my money, happened last year with a lovely gentleman who I gave a deposit to (which is something I never do). Usually a buyer operates in the locality so should be easy enough to get a reference, if someone comes to you out of the blue and never done business in the area I would be suspicious. Usually you get a feel for the person when chatting to them and can work things out for yourself. When I got caught last year, I knew driving out the gate I had done the wrong thing. Another guy owes me for animals and the last time I called I spotted him going out the back door of the house. If he just answered the door and said he hadnt the money I would have said fine, that happens to all of us.

What would happen if you were buying cattle and the seller wanted the cheque to clear and when you come for your cattle he says what cattle?

That's the other side of it for the buyer. I am just wary with all the stories of deals going bad and never met this man before .

Had you the cattle on donedeal or something, or did your man just turn up out of the blue? Just wondering how he knew about you.

Good question. Often wondered that myself. You are totally trusting the seller to put through the movement.

is it not just as simple as holding the cards. i bought a couple of times down the country off random strangers. some took a cheque let the animals off and some just held the cards. If your straight up about it and come around it in a nice sort of a way without denting anyones pride then theres no hassle.
It is simple for mistakes to be made and its better be safe than sorry. I bought before and wrote a cheque. the seller didnt lodge the cheque for over 6 months and when he did the money wasnt there. he had no contact details for me and it was by pure chance i called round one day to him and he said it to me. now we were both at fault. me for not keeping a better record on my account and him for not lodging it sooner but it was easy it happened. cheques are a disaster most of the time.

You would usually know by a fella. Your lad sounds very dodgy.

But it easy enough to get caught out. Thats the good thing about selling in the mart.

lads ask around for a contact for someone that buys cattle in the land. Having a bit of background knowledge on someone will give you piece of mind. A fellow turing up from a long way away and given a good price must have some trick up his sleeve

In the US if you write a cheque and it bounces you are sent on a course on how to manage your money and also made return goods or honor the cheque. If you repeat the offence you go to jail :) proper order unlike here.

**** happens, I never had any problem with any cheque I got that bounced. Banks havnt given much leeway over the last number of years and small amounts over, everyone deserves a break - its only money after all.

a good customer of mine went through a difficult patch some while ago, I never had an issue as I knew the pressure they were under. nowadays cheque is nearly issued before I arrive. The wheel always turns full circle, your down day may unfortunately arrive aswell as mine

It is pretty easy to take credit/debit cards nowadays, there's loads of mobile card solutions aimed at small businesses that don't do too many card transactions. Sumup and syspay are 2 in Ireland that I can think of, I'm sure there's plenty others.

Something similar happened me years ago I was going buying a fireback for the fireplace stopped at traffic lights when this woman as bold as brass opened the door sat in and asked for a drive up town  first thing I did was grab the cheque book and put it in the pocket on the drivers door. I was after buying some electrical stuff as well for £15. When I got home I forgot about where I stashed the cheque book and convinced myself that the wan whipped it so I rang the bank to cancel it. The following Monday your man at the electrical wholesalers was on the phone roaring about the £15 cheque bouncing I told him my story and the cnut wouldn't believe me  I found the cheque book when I was searching the car for a reciept :D

Same here guy who buys almost all the calves had a problem on the home front and money became a problem, we stuck with him as he explained and paid what he could when he could. Got himself sorted and never forgot the turn. Still drives a hard bargain, the hoor

Probably not, on numerous times when I have done a good favour for someone, it was quickly forgotten about

I cant see any mart too impressed if you rock in with a credit card to pay for ten animals, the charges alone would be bigger than there buyers commission. Biggest non-payers in marts are the lads buying a small few cattle every now and again. Its very easy to keep constant buyers accounts in check. On saying that the new rules have cleared up allot of the messing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,556 ✭✭✭simx

Havent seen in any mart except kilkenny although i think there a limit you can spend on a card in one transaction so wouldnt be any good to big buyers

Bought sheep in tullamore a few weeks ago. Went to pay by card. She said they were only getting it installed. They had the physical equipment but hadn't had time to set it up yet.
    So paid by cheque.

What about doing online bank transfer?
This looks interesting, anyone use it? http://www.realexfire.com/

Just as a matter of interest, what is the accepted method when buying cattle privately? I mean when both parties don't know one another personally so both sides just want to keep it above board.

Is it buyer pays with cheque and takes cattle but seller keeps cards till it clears? Are there any guidelines asuch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,313 ✭✭✭✭Sam Kade

I bought heifers last year before a bank holiday weekend so it was a week before I collected them as the seller couldn't do the online movement. I reckon he starved the animals for the week as their sides were meeting when they arrived on my farm  Now I always write tag numbers and have to see identity cards and view cattle before they are loaded. You learn by your mistakes :)

Sold a few cattle on farm recently, he was saying he'd pay cash for them.
Deal was done and he said he mightn't be able to pay all cash would a cheque be ok.
We said no cash no cattle, we got paid the day before collection.
