Need A Few Diet Tips?

Right, I'm Male 21, 5'8 and about 14.5 stone - so horribly, horribly overweight. I'm going to try to lose about 4 or 5 stone over the next few months. I'm only going to have between 1000 - 1500 calories per day and talking long walks and stuff!

What I'm doing now is cutting out all fried food, white bread, cereal and things like that. I've never been eating or drinking sugary drinks, chocolate, sweets etc so there was no change in my diet when I got rid of them. I used to eat a lot of fruit before so I'm keeping that up.

Basically what I'm eating now is:
Breakfast: An apple & Two Hard Boiled Eggs
    Lunch: A Banana
Dinner: 3 Medium Sized Potatoes, boiled & mashed with jackets. I use a bit of butter and salt and I throw in a medium slice of ham as well.

Im not snacking regularly during the day, maybe the odd apple or something like that. Im only a few days in and its going grand, I just wanna be sure I'm doing things right & if there's anything that I could improve upon.

    Thanks

Thats no where near 1000-1500 calories or enough nourishment.

    - Can you up your protein a bit (with good quality meat, not just a slice of ham!). Do you eat fish?

    - Can you add in more salad (no dressing)

    - Can you combine the above and actually have a lunch? The banana should be a snack, not a meal!

    - Do you like nuts/pulses?

Dare I say, what I fear will happen is rather than learn to eat healthily/make better choices 90-99% of the time, youll starve yourself, think youre loosing it, and then put it all back on.

Its all about what your are eating, and believe it or not, you need to eat more (better food) if you are really going to have a go at this.
Do you know anything about nutrition or how have you come up with 2 boiled eggs, bananas, and 3 spuds?

Really? I've been doing that for the past few days & im feeling grand. I've not been feeling that hungry or anything at all. I've just been trying to put together food that fills me and not unhealthy.

    Ummm. haha :)

    Im surprised that youre surprised.

As per post above, Im curious to know how you came up with "2 boiled eggs, banana, and 3 spuds" (sorry I forgot a slice of ham), as being nutritionally sound (although I know you are querying this-you seem happy-but youre not actually going to be doing yourself any favours).

I mean, I see your logic of eating less = loose weight. But what you are doing is like a crash diet. And those never end well.

You can actually eat a lot lot more (and nicer/varied food) and sustain a weight loss!

Ah no, Im not querying it, if you say its a bull**** diet fair enough Ill take your word for it.

Like I said Im just trying to put together some foods that are reasonably low in calories, filling and not unhealthy.

No-I mean, you are querying your current food (which is a good thing!) in order to loose weight.

Im just concerned it sounds more like a crash diet, than a change in your lifestyle/diet!

Imagine yourself in 2 weeks eating 2 eggs, a banana, and 3 spuds, every day/evening. Boring. And it wont sustain you!

You need more (and better quality) meat! More veg. More salad (you say you eat fruit). I would also suggest to you, that if you are eating 3 spuds, that you try eat them around lunchtime (jacket potato, salad, tuna for example), and leave protein only in the evening. It will give you longer/more sustinance during the day.

Food isnt bad (its like you are cutting food out of your diet altogether). Its what your were eating and I would imagine the quantity.

    This is not sustainable.
You may lose a few pounds initially but your body will go into preservation mode with continued calorie restriction and you will stall on the weight loss, give up and end up heavier that you started out. This is what happens to the majority of people on diets.

Go for a lifestyle change and look at losing the weight over a longer period of time. I’ve seen many people lose a lot of weight and get a lot healthier on paleo\primal nutrition plans. Lift heavy weights to move things along.

Your breakfast is Ok, lunch is a disaster and dinner is poor.

So any tips on what I should be doing instead??

Try eating more for lunch, like a chicken breast, or turkey or tuna. Lots and lots of vegetables as someone said above, they fill you up and are low in calories.Try porridge for breakfast with some fruit, really fills you up.

Think about upping the exercise to a light jog and maybe a run at some stage, but you won't be able to do that if you keep that diet up.

Yes-but I hope that you can see that eating properly and good food, in right quantities, for the long term, does not mean gaining weight.

    Its all about educating yourself.

Google "crash diets" to understand what you are currently doing and why it wont work.

Do you understand what protein, carbohydrates/sugars, fats etc mean in food? Or how the body deals with them?
