Insurance with Recently registered car

    Hello,
I was wondering could ye be of some assistance.

I found a car that I want to buy. It's an Audi A4, low milage, full service history, perfect interior, loads of extras, etc.

I understand it was brought in from the UK by the dealer. I think the VRT was paid this month. The problem is that when I enter the vehicle reg for an insurance quote it isn't recognised. It is the same situation with motorcheck.ie & cartell.ie.

The only positive is that when I enter the reg on motortax.ie it is recognised & has been registered.

    Has anyone else experienced this?
I know I can ask the dealer for the UK reg for the background check but it's a bank holiday weekend so I can't do this until Tuesday.

My main concern is that this will cause problems when I go to change over my insurance?

    Cheers

Bit strange that its been registered. That's not the norm. Possible that it was registered for a buyer who then pulled out for whatever reason.

Most likely dealer paid VRT, obtained reg number, but car was not taxed yet, as well as VRC was not issued (it is issued once you first tax the vehicle).
IMHO it looks like normal procedure, as VRC is possibly best to be issued in the name of the buyer - completely no point in taxing the vehicle by dealer before it's sold.

I don't think there could be any insurance implications.
Just ring them, and they will be able to swap it, even though the car is not in the database yet.
Most insurers have no problem insuring a car with foreign numberplate, so they definitely shouldn't have a problem insuring car which is registered, but not taxed yet.

It would have to have been registered in someone's name if vrt was paid - completely no point in VRTing the vehicle by the dealer before its sold

You're correct about the reg cert. not issued till taxed, I know brand new registered cars don't show up on cartell etc till they're taxed.

OP, you can call the insurance companies on the phone and honestly describe the car, type and engine size(exact cc), you need insurance before you can tax it, I did this recently and the one on the phone didnt want to insure it unless it had NCT, when I explained the chicken and egg situation ie; that the car needed to be tax before it could be NCTed and I needed insurance to Tax it then she went off, talked to manager and all was sorted.

You can always insure a car giving them VIN number instead of reg. number.
They can put VIN on insurance disc instead of reg no.

Motor check and cartell and all the rest if those type systems get their details from the motor taxation computer system so until the car is taxed it won't register on them. There will be no problem with the insurance company, you simply provide them with the details when transferring your insurance. They won't question it as it's completely normal for all brand new and imported cars that they cover.

Are you sure that dealer can't VRT a car without providing owner name, and just give name when vehicle is taxed for the first time and VRC issued?

Because I suppose that's the only explanation why vehicle reg. no. shows up on motortax website, but not anywhere else.

Nah it has to be in someone's name. Its very unusual and I'd be curious to know why if I was the buyer. Putting the reg number and the last few digits of the chassis number into motortax.ie wouldn't tell you would it?
