Where are good places to go from Cork via public transport? I'm talking about day visit type things. The idea being it's accessible by public transport, there are no long trips to manage once you get to your destination and you could conceivably have half a day to a full day's activity at the location without spending a fortune.

Blarney Castle, Fota Island, Ballycotton, Clonakilty.

Depends what you're into really. The first two are great half days out, the second two depend on what you're doing, it's a nice walk from Clon to Inchydoney and then do whatever on the beach or dunes.

Loads of stuff down in Ballycotton direction, if the weather is good.

    What do you mean?
Its got a lot of pubs, restaurants, narrow streets with interesting shops, an interesting history etc etc and draws thousands of tourists to it.

How would it not be included in a list of places to visit from Cork city by public transport?

What about the short train trip to Cobh or Midleton or both? Plenty to do in either with Titanic, cathedral, heritage centre and jameson distillery.
Ballycotton is lovely for a cliff walk but I think bus service is very limited. Kinsale is great for pubs and restaurants if you are a visitor and it has Charles Fort too and beaches nearby.
