you will have to pay the tax from the first of the month in which you buy it only.

NCT will be dated from the due date, ie September in this case.

buy the car at the beginning of a month instead of the end of the month and as has been mentioned tax will start from the month you bought the car ie if you bought it next thursday you would have to tax it for october but buy it friday tax starts in november.

NCT is from date it expired not date it is tested.

If you buy a car of 1st November, you will only be liable for tax from November.

Whenever you do your NCT, it will be valid until September.

Minister for the Environment, Community & Local Government Mr Phil Hogan TD, today (1st July 2013) announced the commencement of new procedures for declaring that vehicles are temporarily off the road.

Under the new rules, a non-use declaration can be made in advance of the vehicle being taken off the road for a period of between three and 12 calendar months. The declaration can be made up to one month in advance of the expiry of a motor tax disc or a previous declaration of non-use, while purchasers of new and second hand vehicles will have ten days from the date of registration or change of ownership to make a declaration.

So my question is this if you have a vehicle off the road for less than 3 months does the old procedure of getting the form signed and stamped at your local Garda Station stating that the vehicle was off the road for say a month or two still apply ?

No. Old declarations signed by garda don't apply anymore.

If you want your vehicle off the road for 2 months, then correct procedure is to declare it in advance for 3 month, and then tax it at the beginning of 3rd month.

    Example.
Your tax expires on end of February.
You want your vehicle off the road for March and April, and then you want to drive it again from 1st of May.

So you submit off the road declaration in February, stating that your vehicle will be off the road for March, April and May.
And then on 1st May (before you start driving your vehicle) you tax it.
    That's it.

If the vehicle was due to be taxed from the 1st of October but wasn't in use and the vehicle wasn't declared off the road for this period, then you just go into the motor tax office and tax the vehicle as normal paying the month of arrears, as per usual.

What do you mean by "or a few days before" I am talking about putting the vehicle back on the road at the weekend so will need to renew motor tax tommorrow just wondering if you have to pay the months arrears when it was off the road ?

During which months was your vehicle off the road (since when)?

I understand that you didn't submit any off the road declaration, before you put it off the road?

The vehicle was off the road for the month of October but will be back on the road this weekend so it was off for one month only from October 1st until 31st last tax expired on the 30th of September 2013

So there's not much you can do to avoid paying for October.

You still have two options though.
    1. You can pay tax for 3, 6 or 12 months (starting from 1st October). But that's only assuming you do it in October, so you have just slightly over 2 hours left to do it (online).
    2. If you do it tomorrow or later in November, you will have to pay arrears for October (1/10 of annual tax) + 3, 6 or 12 months tax.

There is third option where you could avoid paying for October by exploiting a loophole in the system, but it wouldn't be worth doing just for sake of 1 month.

So you're saying if I go into motor tax office tommorrow and lets say get 3 months road tax up to the end of the year I will have to pay the months arrears for October + 1/10th of the annual tax for the vehicle, why the extra penalty ?

No. Tomorrow you will pay arrears for October. This will cost 1/10 of annual tax. And you will tax vehicle for 3 months (November, December, January).

To avoid that, you can tax it today for October, November, December.

If i have a vehicle that was imported in 2002 (tractor) but was never actually taxed or no registration book issued but plates were changed to Irish ones. What happens today if I try tax that vehicle but never declared it was off the road since 2002 before the deadline. Am I liable for the arrears since 2002? and if I sell it tomorrow will i still be liable for the arrears and the new owner will only tax from this month onwards? Its still an off road vehicle but want to tax it going forward.

changed it on to Irish plates without telling the Revenue you mean? I wouldn't want to admit to that on a public forum.

If you sell it, the arrears will disappear. If you go to tax it, they will charge you the tax right back to whenever the vehicle that donated it's taxbook was kast taxed.
