Not sure of gaining much but you might get some class of payment depending on your setup ,you need to have your own crush and a shed for the herd number aswell

unless you have land rented that you can put in for SFP/DAS to go along with herdnumber.. if not leave as is and talk nice to your uncle;)

never saw it written anywhere that you require a shed ... you see you could have winterage and or be summer grazers.. I could be wrong though,,.. stockproof perimeter fences and a crush definitely

I have encountered a dept official who insists on me having a shed before i'll get a herd number.

I 'believe' that some for of a shed can be constructed over the crush which would suffice. Can anyone confirm.

The requirement is based on having a place to house a sick animal if required and does make sense.

I plan on building a shed under TAMS2 but that grant probably wont come quick enough for me to get the herd number.

when I went for a herd number, a shed for a sick animal was a prerequisite. as was a crush and all the troughs put out into the field away from the hedgerows and up at 2 foot (to avoid the badgers) but I'm not sure how if farming sheep as well that they would get up 2 foot. I'm not sure if the 2 can be combined as the crush would then be unusable.

Sheep do not get TB! much to the dismay of Dept. & Vets.:(

I wouldn't bother getting separate herd number until ur set up to do. A lot more red tape and no reward. Register with the breed society then when registering embryo calf, if registering online you need to give him a name the society will directly pick it up. Charge u a fee, you then send hair samples and hey presto your in business.

It begs the question: if the trough is up at 2 foot for the cattle, how do the sheep have a drink? Have a trough at ground level with a sign that says "Sheep Only":D

Had a look and I don't think so, do you think I'm onto a winner here? I'll sent them an email with a drawing. :D

And a sign for the cattle "NEVER drink out of a puddle" :)

Great idea I'll put that into the drawing too, as an extra selling point! ;)

Sure ya can omit the sheep only sign with that idea and the one trough will do them all now as the badgers will understand their position.

Not true unfortunately, has been proven to have passed between sheep and cattle on farms in the North:

    http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1046/j.1439-0450.2003.00714.x/abstract;jsessionid=9D3C350FF6257E0C67C2750756D98C93.f02t02?deniedAccessCustomisedMessage=&userIsAuthenticated=false

Just another explanation of how concentrating on an eradication scheme in one species only (cattle) is never likely to succeed....when they share fields with other species commonly infected with TB.

Course the Dept and Vets know this, but it suits them to keep the "eradication" scheme (gravy train) going :(

I reckon we need to go on strike like the French. We're far to placid in this country and political leaders and farm representative organisations have all failed us.
