What have you heard/read is bad about them?

The can give fecky trouble but are fundamentally not disastrous , but because of their reputation you might get further up the years than you originally hoped for, for your 2 k,

there was a slight chance / facelift model 307 from 06 which is better built and sorted, try get into this later model even at high miles,

nice car to drive and good and safe. But look at a good few and bargain hard.

Not a bad little motor, have one in the family the last 5 years. The usual wear and tear, no major hassles. Parts are dirt cheap anyway.

And just while I have the attention of a few motorheads

Why are 10 yr old alfa romeos so cheap? Is it that nobody can afford to run them with their large engines or is that you can't get generic parts for them? Novice question from a novice. They are things of beauty

Personally I wouldn't buy a 307 or an old Alfa.

    There, I said it.

I'm on my 3rd 307 (I'm not a diehard fan, just happened that way) - first two (one bought at a year old, the other new) were grand cars. Boring as bejaysus, but not a minute's trouble out of either of them.

The current one (a CC model) is a Monday morning car if ever there was one - it'd be easier to list the things that haven't gone wrong with it than what has . Funnily enough, the folding roof, which I expected to be the nightmare, has operated perfectly for the three years I've owned it (hope I haven't jinxed myself saying that).

I think they're a great car, and can't understand the terrible reputation they have! But that terrible reputation might just bag you a bargain!!

They are so cheap as the vast majority of them have not had the care and attention they need. They have problems if not looked after, be that from regular oil changes, to timing belt changes, to suspension issues. They also suffer to an extent from reputational issues.

I'd not touch a 10 year old alfa unless I could verify at least some of the history, however 2 years ago I bought an 11 year old one and it's still running fine.

I'd not buy a 307, and would be very careful buying an old Alfa :)

The 307 is hit and miss. Mechanically they were solid enough but they can be a nightmare around electronics. I wouldn't take a chance on a €2k one at this stage.

Maintenance or no maintenance they are as bazz described above.

Even older Pugs weren't fantastic with regards electrics and weren't that well built either. You however could nearly forgive them for this because they were a good car to drive and handled well, a department among many the 307 is lacking in.

The 307 is like an olden-day Toyota Auris :)

Not really, the only thing they have in common is that they are both dull to drive.

Even though the mk1 Auris isn't Toyota's finest effort and isn't as well built as it's predecessors, it's still a good bit better than a 307.

Hear me out... Its got a great safety rating, its brilliantly packaged and its predecessor was light and fun to drive. It shares its core engine with its predecessor but because it weighs as much as the moon its nowhere as nice.

Now which one am I talking about?

...ehh ...the auris? The thing is you see the 307 everywhere. Every 5th car in this country seems to be one. So they must have something going for them.

307 was Cheap and well equipped when they were new. One of the safest cars at the time and one of the first 1.4 diesels too.

Doesn't mean they're any good though.

Generally the 307's are fine....like above one can be lucky/unlucky with them.
The 1.4 petrols are fine but can suffer from poor fuel economy.

The 1.4 hdi's are a great little economical engine but they won't win any speed records....have seen these engines reaching 250k mls without any major problems..:)

Maybe talk to your local mechanic/garage and if there familiar with them and are happy to work on them then i'd go for one......like any car that one buys just ensure you get a mechanic to check it over to be on the safe side....;)

Missus has a 1.4hdi for the last year or so, it will be going on donedeal soon, probably buy her a 306 xud

Car was a bit of a wreck when I bought it for her. Needed 1 injector. 2 glow plugs were snapped in the head, head off to fix. Recon'd the head while it was off. New stem seals. Blanked EGR. Water pump was leaking so changed it and belt and thermostat. New boost pipe as it was knackered. Rear wheel bearings were fecked at 75k miles, they come as an assembly with the disc, bloody expensive things. Heater fan was shot, they give awful trouble on these. The fan resistor burns itself and its connector and unless your handy with a soldering iron its an expensive fix to replace the loom and resistor. Resistor can be got for €15 on ebay. The comms 2000 unit (wipers, lights, etc) is also notorious on these, my one turns on the lights by itself and cancels indicators and then turns on lights. They can give airbag faults too and other mad things. They are about €200 on ebay. The whole floor of the car was soaking wet and turned out the windscreen was leaking. entire interior has to come out to dry and windscreen got 'fixed' (Thanks fbd). Rear wiper motors are also crap and lose their park position and everytime the bsi wakes up the wiper would go crazy. Aircon doesn't work, leaky radiator, diagnosed for free by fastfit... Cd player also didn't work, replaced it.

Thats all I can think of at the moment, there is probably more tbh.

Main things to look out for are regular oil changes, a working heater fan, dry footwells, that all the lights and indicators do as their told, and a rear wiper that parks properly and doesn't decide to wipe by itself.

    Phew....
