    Hi guys,

Got my first payslip in a new job today and I was horrified to find i was overcharged on my USC by 230??

I calculated my liability and its only €71, but my total was €300.

Can anyone explian why this is? Who can I contact? I cant ring revenue because i work 9 to 5 and my network is 48, so i cant call 1890 numbers.

Revenue don't do your payslips so I'd start with your payroll to ask on what basis they calculated your USC. If there's a problem then contact Revenue via email.

EDIT: Beaten to it by relax :)

Start with your payroll department- did they receive a certificate of tax credits and cut-off from you when you joined? What instruction does it show in respect of the USC?
If they didn't receive a certificate of tax credits, then you'd be place on the emergency basis which would mean you're charged 7% on the entire salary. To rectify this, you need to contact your tax office and request that they issue a cert of tax credits to your employer (you'll need the employer's PPS number which payroll can give you).
One other point- as it's relatively late in the year you might end up having to wait until January to fully sort out any refunds due- this could arise if you are placed on the "week 1 / month 1" basis- see here for details but the main effect is that your employer can't issue refunds (it will be sorted out by the tax office in 2014).

Well when I first started I gave HR a copy of my P45 and filled out the 12A form and sent it too my tax office. Also I calculated the 7% against my income and its definitely not that.

Also can I ask you guys if you know how the exemption is calculated? My yearly earnings for 2013 will fall below 10035.

Payroll department would be my first port of call. Something similar happened to me during the year, 6 months into the job the revenue changed my USC to a weekly basis rather than monthly. There was no communication from my employer or the outsourced payroll company to revenue so to this day it's a bit of mystery. The error coincided with an increase in salary so I didn't deck it at first, payslip had been correctly calculated from start so made mistake of assuming that increase in gross would also be calculated correctly. Lesson is..... Never assume

Once reason was identified I got my money back in following month on payslip.

Update: Turns out the rate bands for the USC didn't transfer from your previous employer.

    So I'll get it back!

    Thanks a mill!:D
