Twelve years ago, on October 25th, 2001, Windows XP was released to the general public. The "Fisher-Price OS" went on to become the most successful operating system of Microsoft’s history. Notwithstanding a barrage of attempts to kill it off, XP is still going strong, holding one third of the desktop OS market shares.

Microsoft will stop supporting it in April 2014

So I guess time to start saying good bye to any XP systems still running.

First and foremost, they'll enjoy a very quiet and peaceful Patch Tuesday.;)

And of course, no more "Windows Update wiped my files" or "Windows Update stuck in a loop". :D

It will be a malware/virus writers dream :D . But people should upgrade before hand, even now would be a good time to start. Either to go the Windows 7/8 route if the hardware is still decent enough or look at installing a free Linux distro on it (which would be perfect for general office/internet use)

And then there was this little known (and latest) editition of Windows XP:

    TYWY9oV.jpg

Windows FLP (for legacy puters ;) ) was introduced in 2006. Fundamentals is by far the fastest booting Windows OS. It is also the last Windows version where the installation of Internet Explorer was left to the users discretion.

Unlike Windows 7 Starter, FLP was never made available for the broader public, only for members of Microsoft's Software Assurance program. Although FLP is the "No Frills" version of XP, there really isn't any limitation to its functionality, except the lack of "Compatibility Mode", a strange decision, as FLP was designed to replace Windows 98 on older computers.

Nice, never heard of it. Does support end for this version on the same date as XP? Or is there an extended support cycle for it?

    Same date.

Only Windows Embedded Standard (based on XP) will be around a little longer, extended support ends 2019. ;)

The theme is available here. It was extracted from the original OS which makes it kinda semi-official, like Royale Noir (these themes don't require the UX theme patcher). Only two additional XP themes were ever officially released by Microsoft, Royale (based on the Media Center edition) and Zune.

    Shame. Cheers for that :)

XP SP3 was probably the most solid piece of software that MS ever released.

Even when XP SP3 was launched, it was a lot less solid than Vista SP2, W7 SP1 or W8(.1) proved to be in their day ;)
