    Hey all,

At the moment I'm driving a car that has been in our family since the late 90s and I am thinking about buying a good second hand car.

I was just curious to know what documentation and papers should I receive from the garage, owner etc when I purchase a car?

Also a lot of the cars in Irish garages seem to be UK imports so is there a difference between what documents I get when buying?

    Thanks in advance.

You'll be send a registration certificate shortly after the purchase. This is irrespective of origin as the car will have been re-registered. There are no more log books.

Well in buying 23 cars in my lifetime (that i can recall) the garage has never failed to ensure all documentation was correct and forwarded correctly. Of course when buying a car everybody should make sure the seller and car are legitimate but that was not what vi thought the OP was asking about.

There is only one document when buying a car - the logbook. Its real name is Vehicle Registration Certificate.
It has all the info on the car and also info on the owner.
Once a car is sold the buyer put their name and address in a section in the VRC. The seller then send the logbook to Shannon (Dept of Vehicles). Shannon processes it and send a new logbook to the new owner, after a few weeks.
