Turbo re-conditioning

Hi everyone, there's a lot of shaft play in the turbo in my car, and oil is flowing through it into the intercooler piping, so it's time to fix it.

I was going to get it re-conditioned for €500, which includes cleaning the sump out and all that.

I also saw this on ebay: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/190938540704?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Replacing the cartridge myself would mean that I would save €350, but are these things any good? Has anybody here done it before?

I would be comfortable doing it myself as we have taken the turbo apart before to clean it out. The car is a Mk1 focus tdci.

    Thanks,

    Cian.

Thanks ybfocus :) Would it be recommended to take the sump off and clean it out or is there much need?

Once you know what you're doing, you'll be fine. Make sure it goes back on the same way it came out (ie clocked correctly) oil and air pipework are cleaned out.

Considering there is shaft play, make sure the housing isn't damaged.

Has the wrong oil been used at some stage or left too long?

I only got this car 2 months ago but the play has been there since we got it, we did a full service to it with the right oil. Reckon the turbo is just old, the car has 140,000 miles done and by the look of things the turbo was never removed before.

In fact, the reason we took it apart before is because the vanes were stuck solid, when we took it apart we found that the vanes were completely surrounded by built up carbon :o Which is a good thing in a way, I guess it shows the previous owner wasn't a hard driver!

I got a car from a similar style of driver: owned for about 13 years, never put over 2.5k rpm or 60mph. When I took the engine out, it was caked in sludge and dirt, 2nd gear was shot and now the stem seals are kaput. My own daily driver had a similar handyish lifestyle, yet had its turbo shaft snapped and the engine burning oil too.... Moral of the story is cars should be driven normally not handily ;)

    How does the oil look?

Ah god that's frightening me now!

I think my driving style should get rid of all the built up carbon. ;)

I'll check the oil for you tomorrow, it's been a couple of weeks since I last checked.

Are you the guy with all the xud's actually? I had a 205 before, with an xud8, now that was an engine! :)

What happens is they get caked up with soot as there isn't enough hot gasses to dislodge and burn that soot build up.... Sadly often owners with this mentality often have wrecks "sure I never drove it hard, always handy" :(

When your new turbo goes on keep the oil changed at the intervals with the right stuff and it'll go on and on and on :)

Yeah I read about that, oh forgot to say that the day we took the turbo off, we had to take the air intake off too... My god it was caked up with shíte! Spent a good 45 minutes trying to scrape it off and spraying egr cleaner on it. There was some pile of crap on the ground after it!

Nice. Would love to have a turbo xud, easy to work on and tuneable ;)
