Ideally should be Class 7 or higher to perform up to scratch. OK if you are puttin photos etc on it.

class 4 won't perform well at all with high res pics or hd video.

You can get a card on amazon for a similar price, but obviously you don't have to pay postage this way and its convenient. Class 4 should be fine for casual use in a phone, its really needed for stuff like hd video recorders or streaming hd video as I imagine it doesn't have the speed to keep up. For playing mp3s and storing angry birds though its grand !

It's for a compact camera 14 megapixels max, have used class 4 for video and pic's before and it worked perfect, shot some last night on the new card and I am happy with the quality.

digital cameras all have very fast onboard memory for storing images as they are captured, before they get moved to your SD card, but normally this will only be for one or two images, so with a slower card if you're taking 'burst' shots (i.e. 3+ shots one after the other without pausing), this could cause a problem as it won't be able to write to the card and flush it's internal memory fast enough to take the next picture when it wants to. it will just mean a *slight* delay between shots though, nothing major.

for your average pocket digital camera or lower MP DSLR's though, it's plenty fast enough for the average user and will also be quick enough for 720p video (depending on the codec used), although i'd want at least a class 6 (or preferably class 10) for 1080p video just to be 100% sure.

you also have to take into account how long it's going to take to copy images/video from the card onto a computer.

if it's an old digital camera with a 2gb card it's not going to be much of an issue how slow the card is, but with bigger cards and higher res pics/video it all starts to come into play.

having said that, for a class 4 32gb card, that is a great price, even beating (or at least closely matching) pretty much all online shops when you inc. postage and if all you need is a class 4 card then it's a definite bargain. :)

and now having said that, if you shop around (online) you should be able to find a class 10 card for less than €25, so it really does depend on what you need and how much you're willing to spend to get it.

I am after a large tf or mini sd at the moment for a recording device. Is there any bargains to be had?

Excellent wiki on sd cards. Totally agree about the inordinate length of time to read and particularly write to slow usb/sd cards. A real pain if you are in a hurry. I found its worth doing a read/write speed test on cards and writing it on them then I swap my cards dependent on the use. I'd shy away from slow cards unless very cheap

Might add that some equipment may be limited in what memory size it will accept, typical limits are 2Gb, 16Gb. They usually need to be specified SDHC compatible to accept large memory cards. My car stereo only takes 2Gb, my video camera 16Gb.

Another consideration is physical size - most cameras etc are now microSD, you can use micro in an adapter for SD but not the other way around.
I usually prefer to buy micro now for compatibility as they can be used in phones too.

    Any experience on failure rates?
