Used to graze sheep on turnips only and they did great. For the first week they will need something till they get used to the turnips, don't put them in hungry or they will gorge themselves on the leaves and you will be in trouble

Is it for cattle or sheep?

When we grazed cattle we placed bales in rows and as we moved the wire opened the bales, cattle munched away happy days.

If its sheep I have no idea

Often wondered with grazing swedes/turnips, is there much waste? The leaves OK, but what about the root? How do they manage to eat that when it's stuck in the ground??!! Sorry if this is a silly question, no practical experience of this system.

Absolutely none, I use them all and provided that you havethe right strip they waste nothing.strip grazing beet at the minute and there is nothing left using the variety bolero.probably wouldnt work with higher dm variety but they just knock it over and devour it.have done the bales in the feild too but ith rape kale and turnips and has worked well.I was thinking that imight buy a few bales of haylage and would be hoping 2 aweek would do.cows only,

2 bales a week would work out around 3.5 - 4 kg DM/LU per day or about 25% of daily intake so should be plenty.
If your utilisation is excellent could probably get away with a few less.

Very little waste with turnips, any root left in the ground can be grubbed up and then eaten. Reps won't allow me to grow and graze in the field otherwise I would still grow them

Are they sown in drills? what month are they sown? & is the seed cheap? I see a good bit around this year with the bales on the headland...

Used to sow on the flat end of May, seed not expensive, used to till in herbicide and the spray against beetle once the seed struck ,then shut the gate ,rabbits could do damage, needs 350-500kgs of fert , things may be done differently now as I haven't grown for a few years
