Taking over dairy farm

    well lads/lassies.
i'm a 38 yr old mechanic/farmer. my father has a dairy farm about 100 acres including about 10 acres of scrub/rushes.

I work full time in a garage/24hr breakdown service and the rest of the time(if there's any) I spend giving a hand on the farm. I intend leaving the garage when daddy retires and concentrate on the farming.

my question is, do I need to do certain agri related courses in order to avoid getting hit by some inheritance tax thing when this happens.

i'm doing a distance learning "farm management" course at the minute, it's just a general course that has nothing to do with teagasc or the dept of agri.,

    what would ye advise.
    thanks

Taking over a 100 acre Dairy farm is not really in the smallholding realm I would imagine :D

    To OP,

How do you apply for the course you are currently doing.....I want to apply for planning permission on an outfarm more than 5km away and they want me to prove I am training to be a farmer o qualify for local needs......

I was on to Teagasc and all the 'green certs' are booked until October 2014.
The course you doing might work for planning purposes.

    Thanks OP

its a farm management course, it's distance learning so it's all done at home and you email all your projects/assignments to a tutor. it's only a foundation type course, don't know if it would suit your needs or not.

    www.coursesdirect is the website.
