The Transcendent Pain: A great essay on cycling & pain, suffering and the power of self control. Also interesting art work in the first few pages.

Lance Armstrong once said that pain was temporary, and quitting lasts forever... But since he admitted to using a shed load of banned pharmaceuticals. We now realise Lance probably felt little or any pain, as he ripped the legs off his competitors and left them gasping for breath.

Reckon most sporting cyclists have a pretty similar tolerance for pain and suffering. It's just some go a little bit faster due to genetic factors like having a higher VO2 max.

Pain threshold perceived and real is an area I have always been interested in. One of the things I like about strava is when I come home after a slow cycle, where the hills were tough, head wind a killer, heavy legs etc only to find that I actually did a pb.

Wow, Man That brought one smile to my face this morning. Thanks for sharing :)
bike racers seem to have a love of suffering that goes beyond any reasonable ratio of sacrifice and payoff. “We think of it as delaying gratification for some reward,” says Lim, “but it’s never really about the reward; it’s about the moment, when you’re performing at your limit. And when it’s over, the only thing you want to do is get back out there again.”
