Dave McKane over at http://iop.ie/courses/index.htm generally has some good stuff going.

I did the Creative Photography course in the Gallery of Photography, well recommended. This other one there may suit you.

Yea, I did a course in Institute of photography on Lord Edward Street - useful photoshop course there too.

I did it a few years back and am a DCC member since :)

I found it very good and thanks to outings during the course you get to use what you learned while using your own camera.

I would suggest look at camera clubs and see what if anything they are doing. As far as I know http://stbrigidsphotogroup.blogspot.ie/ St Brigids will be running one in the New Year and will be free to all paid up members of the club.

Keep an eye on their site.

Generally speaking you get better value for money from a Camera Club membership than a course. Of course as a club member you get out what you put in. Also different clubs suit different people. I was a member of DCC when living in Dublin. It suited me fine. Big club with lots of facilities and plenty of experienced photographers to learn from along with great talks.

If you were looking at the IOP courses would you dip your toe in and do one of the shorter/weekend courses or just dive in and do a 6 month/one year one? It's a lot of money to put up for the more intensive ones. Anyone here completed any of them and care to share what you feel you got out of it?

Is it only worth doing the longer courses if you're 100% about trying to make a career out of photography?

I've done a few of Daves courses and was very happy with them. I guess the good thing about doing a short course first is that you'll get a feel of how he runs them and if you're happy then invest more time and money in them.

    Bump :)

I'm also interested in taking the IOP course. It's quite pricey though! Any more thoughts on it? What would the age profile generally be? I'd like to do a class with people around my own age (mid–late-twenties) ideally.

    Thanks

Anyone done the below? Heard good things and that it may be a better option than the Dublin camera club?

It's also an idea to check out the work of some of these instructors before you fork out the cash. Most of them are pretty easy to find online.

I personally wouldn't be comfortable taking lessons from somebody who was into a style of photography that I felt was indicative of a lack of taste on their part...

I'm trying to be diplomatic here, but I don't know how well I'm succeeding. Not all instructors are equal, is the basic message. Tailor him or her to your own tastes.
