JSA and part time work

    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this as I've two questions I'm confused about!
I've been on JSA full time up until now. I'm starting a job this week and I'm going to be working three days a week. I've been in to the social welfare office and they told me that I have to just let them know very week what days I'll be working.

So my first question is : what counts as a week for them? If I work Wednesday Thursday and Friday this week but work Monday Tuesday and Wednesday next week, does that disqualify me for this weeks payment or do they count weeks as the normal Monday-Sunday?

And secondly: this Monday is a bank holiday and I won't be working. I know the social welfare don't pay for bank holidays.... That's okay.... But if I work three days next week will I still get my payment? Or will they count it as 4 days because of the bank holiday?

    Thanks so much

A week to them is whatever period your JSA covers, which I think is Wednesday-Tuesday

Not sure how the payment works, but main thing is if you work more than 3 days in the welfare week you wont get paid for that week.

Is there a monetory limit as well as a day limit?

    It's means tested.

I think its 24 hours max so say 8 hours a day x3 = 24hours.If you do 6 hours x4 days they dont pay.Its a bad system and should have been changed in the last budget. No incentive. With the cost of travelling to a job nowadays if only for small hours and small money, most cant be bothered.

Job seeker allowance is means tested
In your case it is a casual job while you continue looking for a full time job. You will be assessed on your rate of pay.

JSA week begins on Wed finishes on Tuesday

If you work 4 days on casual you won't receive any payment

However depending on the amount of means applied on your job you may not entitled to any JSA when working. Unusual but it can happen.

You are paid by cheque and it is issued every Friday

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all the replies and ye information. That has cleared things up for me so I'm a little less confused! I've jus one more thing I was hoping to clear up!
What will happen with the bank holiday Monday? If I work my usual 3 days and not the bank holiday will I still get paid? Or will I be paid but less than usual? Or so they not pay me anything cos of the bank holiday anyway?

Bank hols are count as a days work.

However you won't be entitled to payment from your employer

To be entitled to payment from an employer you must have worked for 40 hours or more in the 5 weeks leading up to the bh, the employer can give you hours in lieu or your average wage per day over the last 13 weeks

Inform the social welfare of this

If you have only started the job its unlikely you employer will pay the bank holiday as a holiday for you .Some do and take it off your holidays later. To be honest you are better working the b/h as the s/w dont pay out usually.

You won't get paid for a 4 day week AFAIK

If you work no days you will get a full week of job seekers

If you are claiming job seekers benefit the payment is not means assessed. JB week starts on Tuesday and ends Wednesday
