Where do you blow air in a dvd drive. is it in the the part that pulls out to allow loading or inside where it goes into the laptop. And where s the parts that needs cleaning, the lens i think. I read there is a lens for cd and another for dvd?

I am expecting something i have a right to copy and will want to rip and make a backup

    This is the burner

It will read Cd but will not read DVD.

DVD/CD burners have two different lasers afaik, one for CD the other for DVD. It could be the DVD laser has died while the CD one is still functioning ok. Do DVDs read at all with errors (try testing retail discs) or do they not read full stop?

buy DVD lens cleaning disc ,cost 2 euro in 2 euro shop,
clean it once or twice , leave try open, to let it dry.
use a tiny amount of cleaning fluid, on the disc ,brush.
some hardware shops sell them too.
does it play dvds , movies?

Sounds like the drive needs replacing if DVDs won't playback/detect at all

Does My Computer display the DVD title, or even DVD Video or words along those lines on the optical drive item, or does it appear to remain empty?

Clean the lens using a dvd , cleaning disk,
theres no program or utility that,ll tell you the lens need cleaning,

i fixed at least 3 dvd drives , and 1 dvd player ,using a 2 euro cleaning disk.

A pc cant detect a dirty dvd lens ,
it,ll say cannot read disc when you put in a dvd disk.
EVEN A 100K bmw wont tell you when theres mud on your indicator lights.
you can buy dvd rom cleaning discs in maplins, pc world.
they work the same as a 2 euro disc ,small brush on the disc cleans the lens .http://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=clean+dvdrom+++lens+%3F

spend 2 euro on a cleaning kit ,before you replace the drive.
takes 5 minutes to clean the lens,
leave to dry out for at least 10 minutes.

Your issue is likely a dead DVD laser, the drive probably needs replacing

put cleaning disc in the drive , turn on pc, set bios menu, boot option, ,boot from dvd, dvd= boot drive device 0, first boot device.
You need to get dvd to spin up ,play for maybe 20 seconds ,
in order to clean the lens.

its also possible laser maybe dead.
    AS yoyo said.
or maybe clean lens with cleaning fluid, put small amount on a cotton ball.
    http://voices.yahoo.com/how-clean-cd-dvd-player-simple-steps-3999001.html,
i would go to chemist and get pure alcohol ,years ago.for this
leave cd tray open,to let lens dry out after cleaning.

Can you not see the lens when drive is open?

Give it a gentle brush or clean with cotton bud, will do the same as a dvd cleaning disc

Yes it would to beam light onto the inner/outer areas of the disc. Glad to hear that sorted it!

YEAH ,you could clean vcr heads using the same method, cotton buds
    with alcohol on them.
i presume its now playing dvds .
I,ve never seen a pc drive with a broken laser, usually its a dirty lens,
    or a software driver problem.
