2004 hyundai matrix 1.6 petrol service and timing belt

    Hi All,

My elderly parents brought their car to the local main dealer to be serviced last week. The service included oil and filter change, air filter clean, front brake pad change and the fitting of a pair of H4 osram night breakers (which I had recommended). The cost of all this came to €270. A little steep in my book but I think €120 of that was labor.
They have been told to bring the car back to get a timing belt changed and a powered steering belt fitted. The quote is just under €500 for this. I'm wondering could there be any saving in going to a local mechanic or is belt changing a strictly dealer-only procedure.
My mother is undergoing treatment for cancer and they can't afford to be without the car as it's a 100km round trip to the hospital in Cork.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Any mechanic should be able to change the belt. Where abouts in Cork are you OP?

I'm in Bandon. The car is further west near Clonakilty but we can drive it anywhere. My parents were so desperate not to get overcharged they were looking into perhaps booking it into Fitzpatricks in Naas (where the car was originally purchased and subsequently maintained before they moved to Cork earlier this year).

The cost of fuel going up and down would make that mad.
I can give you the details of a good lad who got my OH out of some bother earlier this year. He works from his house but has all the tools he needs.
Alternatively I can recommend a few good garages in the city. (Obviously price the job with a few of them).

PM me if you want details.

From a spot of googling it seems the timing belt interval for the Matrix 1.6 is every 5 years or 60k miles - but there's not much info, maybe someone else with a service book will have better numbers.
    Has belt been changed before?

no changing the belt can be done by an indy, if you were in dublin I could recommend and unbelievably cheap mechanic, but cant help with cork! no way Id be sending that car in for main dealer anything anymore...
