The question that I'm looking to have answered is as follows,
Should I be looking to change from a compact to standard chainset?

    A 50 x 12 @ 100rpm = 53kph.
    A 50 x 11 = 57.5 kph.

That should do you at A4.

Changing the 34 to a 38 will lessen the jump between rings.

Cycled A4 this year using a compact (Tiagra 50/34) had an 11 on the cassette and I never felt I need a bigger gear. I know some of my club mates rode with the same configuration, its not an issue.

It depends what compact you have, some are faster than others

Cheers for that it only confirms what I've been thinking already have an 11 with the 50 and I'm rarely out of the big ring so the 38 sounds like a plan too

I like the idea of changing the 34 to a 38 as I've always thought that the drop from 50 to 34 is the biggest disadvantage of a compact. Both in terms of the ratio gap and the risk of dropping the chain right over the 34 onto the BB when changing down under duress.

Might go out and buy a 38 to try it out. Presumably no derailleur adjustment needed?

Well, you're going to need to take it off to get the old ring off and the new one on.

Compact is fine. Here is a picture of a person winning on a compact.

    No, this isn't correct.
