    Resale proof.
If you are buying it to run into the ground then its fine, but otherwise I would go in with my eyes open

Crazy money for such a car with very small little demand in this country. If memory serves me well that car has been on sale for some time now but not surprising given the silly asking price.

so what would be a realistic price for this car ?

    maaaybe :)

The m sport suspension is doing my head in - and I have changed to standard tyres

Its lovely on the motorway or on a decent road etc but I just don't like it over speed ramps, when I hit potholes etc

Jaysus you would want to be abit touched to pay that

I have the msport suspension so I will declare a bit of bias, but what car doesnt mind hitting potholes?

ok, so what would be a realistic offer for this car ?

The car is nearly 6 years old, I'd be offering around €9k for it

Nice car. Don't know why there is such a downer on Petrol passats.
Lots of paSsat owners should be driving these instead of diesels. The tax should be ok ish too. No dmf problems, no rattly diesel. Really would be a nice car with 160 bhp. If it's like my 1.8 Tfsi audi, no timing belt either to worry about although there are alot of different setups I think. That model passat is a bad drive in terms of handling in my opinion. No feel at all from the rear end and alot of side to side rocking.

Thanks mickdw. Yeah, in fairness , not a bad car and should be relatively pokey. tax is 636 I think. It has a decent enough spec too. This forum is good and I like it alot and its been very helpful to me over the years.......but some people tend to scold you if you are not buying a 3 litre 6 pot.

Very very heavy on petrol for the size of engine I heard from a person who had one. I don't know if its match between engine and box or ecu settings but they have a rep for being guzzlers I have heard.

Jaysus. Right. How in the name of Christ is the pricing so arse ways. That's the cheaper of similar type mercs -- there is another 2008 C180 up there for 18,950.

I hired a 2010 passat 2.0 petrol auto in Spain a few years back. I had it for 2 weeks abc done mainly motorway miles on it and it was sore on fuel. I worked out that it was doing roughly 30-33mpg. However I did show it on most times when driving it and usually say at around the 140kmph mark on the motorway. It should possibly get closer to the 40mpg figure when driving more conservatively

    Nice 2008 E200 kompressor sport on carzone.ie
    12,900.
Mercedes couldn't give these away when tax changes came in but if you want a petrol and plan on holding it about 3 years, you wouldn't be taking a huge hit price wise.
Don't know how reliable they are but they are around 180 bhp.

Id say low 30s is where it's at with those.
If looking for better, diesel is the choice but if small miles were being done, I'd go with the petrol. Turbo petrol is quite nice to drive too.

Well if considering a Merc I'd definitely suggest an E over a C having spent time with both. Much nicer place to be, bigger and very comfortable.

I had a drive of the passat in my earlier post.

    Not bad.

Strange thing is that on the gear lever it does not say DSG at all.

so I'm wondering if its not DSG, what is the transmission ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It's probably the older multi-tronic gearbox from Audi as Audi developed that 1.8 TSi engine. How many forward gears did it have?

    I think it had 6
Does that make it different ?

Double check it. DSG would be fine, Multitronic and I'd run away screaming. Multitronic more common I'd have thought.

Multitronic is a belt driven CVT box and is awful. Prone to trouble.

    Thanks. So it's not DSG

IF it's a 5 speed as opposed to a 6 speed, does that mean it's not multitronic ? Or is it probably still multi tronic either way ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,855 ✭✭✭obi604

    Confirmed. It's a 6 speed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I think from 2008 onwards the DSG was 7 speed. If it doesn't have DSG on the shifter then it most likely is the old multitronic.

A little bit of research suggests that the transmission in that car is the type 09G which is a conventional torque converter auto. No idea if there are any specific weak points with it though a straw poll on Google raises some concerns. Do your homework on this one I think.

Yeah, definitely no DSG written on the shifter. Spent a good bit looking for this.

    thanks.

So to sum up, this car could have

    a) multitronic transmission

b ) conventional torque converter transmission

And both seem to be not great.

No you can't infer that at all. I'd be for checking the vin at a dealer to confirm.

If it's a conventional torque convertor auto that's a plus actually. I had an 05 Passat with one for a while and it was lovely.

Incorrect. A is rubbish. B is good.

Vin number check is the only way to be 100% imho. Absence of a badge or sticker means s.f.a. imho.

Thanks all. So I need to get the vin number and then ring a main Volkswagen dealer and ask them what transmission it has.

    Hopefully it's a conventional torque converter ; )

Option codes as found in boot and service book would also give all details of engine, gearbox and spec.

got this checked out. They said "Its just a auto box no DSG OR Multi "

So presume from this that they mean its a conventional torque converter.

Attached is the screen grab I was sent.
