So got into the road cycling this year... now fancy a blast at the trails.

Thinking of spending 500 max either second hand or new if I can get a decent deal.

What should I be looking for in the bike, I assume hydraulic brakes but anything else to look out for?

What about the kit, do I need to gear up from scratch or will any of the road kit be of use shoes, shorts etc?

    Thanks

Second hand bike, front suspension. Most of your road stuff will be grand, except shoes and pedals, a camelback is also nice.

+1 Great value in secondhand bikes at the moment.

Rockshox Tora, Recon & Reba are all good forks.
As a general rule, I'd avoid RS & Suntour forks.

Of all areas of cycling mtbing is a confusing one when entering.
    3 choices of wheel size.
    Full suspension or hardtail
Trail bike, xc, downhill mix of road and trail etc

There is very good value at moment especially 26" bikes.
