I have my name down for an Alfa 4C... The production version won't be available here for about 12 months... I love this car, but I can't justify the cost of the tyres etc... it's just a step too far for me... I can wait till the end of 2014 and get the new spider instead... or should I just say feckit and bite the bullet. There's one coming to the showroom next month.

    I hate you:pac:

Lash up a pic of the spider, and then (I'll still hate you:P) I'll give you an answer.

Spider is still in development... But I can't imagine a scenario where I wouldn't like it... I'm very into their whole philosophy at the moment - low weight cars with simple and efficient engines with bit of performance.

So let me get this.. You've put your name down for a new car...

But you can't justify the cost of tyres.....

    .... Ehhh.

    tyres etc...

there's obvious costs associated with driving a performance car like this... insurance where I live is 7% of the cars 'new' value. You are expected to service every 5000km which won't be cheap on a car like this... although I have arranged to meet the dealer to discuss all this. The details have been very sparse so far... most of the launch editions were bought up by collectors here. This would be my daily driver.

I'm just not sure if I want to stretch that far for a car... I'm not exactly rolling in it... The spider seems like it would be just right for me, but the 4C would be a whole other experience...

I think the real question here is how many seconds does the duct tape save round the ring?

Whats the list price on them here?

45-50 in the uk. So I shudder to think what it'll be here. If they even sell it here.
It isn't up on the alfa ireland website.
I'll pick up mine second hand in a few years...even if it hasn't devalued all the niggly bits will be ironed out by then.

I really hope this is the start of alfa returning to the previous set up of a hatch 2 saloons and a sports car and all rear wheel drive.

45-50k £££££? Not euros? Even in Euros that is a bit..... A LOT.

It is lovely and all, but for that price I would pass.

45k sterling. The irish price hasn't been decided yet.
The 1st release in the uk has already sold out.

Are they even going to be sold officially here? Alfa can scarcely sell their core range here!

There's be a few interested in ireland is say.
They sold a few of the gta's back around 03 so I could see them selling a couple of them.

I'm going to guess that It'll come out of the uk allocation though.

So yeah probably won't be sold officially.

List price in France is €51k

If you are worried about servicing costs then it might not be the car for you.

I would say between €80k-€90k here. Can't see too many takers, if any.

    Two completely different market segments.

Last thing on my mind would be keeping tyres on a car not shy of supercar status

03...that was ten years ago, when there was still a few bob around the country.
I can't see a rush to buy a 4c, no matter how gorgeous they are.

If you're at that sort of car surely a second hand porsche cayman would be a lot more car for the money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,686 ✭✭✭✭Zubeneschamali

It's a small market: beepbeep says

    Porsche Cayman: 0
    Porsche Boxster :1
    Lotus anything: 0

Mercedes sold 12 SLKs, BMW sold 3 Z4s.

The 4C won't be convertible, unlike nearly all of those sales.

Second hand? A brand new Cayman lists for under £40k in the UK. The 4C will be very close in price to the Cayman S (just under £50k)

That is a very ambitious price for the Alfa (seeing it also has just a cheapish 4-pot turbo charged engine), but I'd say it will sell well (but not here)

I'm looking at a car park right now with a range of 131/2 Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Porsche Cayennes and at least 1 131 Ferrari. There is lots of money still there for some people.

There is a small pocket of Dublin people who are still buying cars like that but they are non-existent in the rest of the country.

Off the top of my head I can think of a few such cars I see around Galway on a regular basis. A Bentley Continental, Maserati Quattroporte, Audi RS6 and my parents neighbour has a Porsche 911.

That's as maybe, but how many of those cars are owned outright..?
Finance is a great thing. Have to miss a payment..? Then just give the car back.
Ten years ago, most would have bought, not rented.

Im not so sure, 10 years ago it was easier to get finance.

Its a lovely little car, there would be a small market for it here. At least it would be something different.
Op if you are worried about tyres etc, what the hell are you buying a brand new car for?

Although a lot of cars aren't being bought there is still a lot of people in every part of the country with lots of cash on deposit. Don't get me wrong there are lots of people who have fcek all too. I'm one of them. IIRC we are currently one of the worlds top savers as a proportion of the population.
That's as maybe, but how many of those cars are owned outright..?
I'm willing to bet they own them outright. I spotted a few new RangeRovers the week they were launched and I've seen a number of new F-Types.

Want a Porsche, but need a Merc, but couldn't stand an S-Class - that's the Panamera then. For what it is, it's excellent. But if a Boxster/911/Cayman would work for you, you'd buy that instead.

Back o/t, then the Alfa site quotes " Combined 41.5 mpg (6.8 I/100km). CO2 emissions 157 g/km ". So VRT won't be bananas, and sure shes' on the 'chaeap tax' :D

Car still won't be cheap though, but at least a greater portion of it will be for the car, as distinct from the taxman. That I could live with.

And you're right about there still being money out there: I saw a guy buying a €32k Harley on Saturday and his only conundrum was .........which colour.

We really need people like that to buy stuff tbh, as otherwise it'll never trickle down to the likes..............well, me !! :D :pac:

The 4C does look very nice alright but will Alfa even sell it in this country? The market for that car is tiny and consists mostly of the people ba_baracus is looking at out his window who can afford the high running costs of luxury cars with bigger engines.

But it doesnt have a bigger engine, think lotus elise rather than M3.

Edit: I just had a go at their configurator, in black, with the little spoiler, black multispoke wheels with chrome highlites and red callipers............I think I'm going to have to go away for a 'good hard think' about something :)

Will it be hammered on emmissions/VRT? Under the old cc system it probably would have been quite reasonable as only 1.8l. Good only knows now what it'll be.

Band D (157g) so cheaper than what it would have been on the old rate.

I know it doesn't have a big engine. My point was that people who can spend that kind of money on a 2 door sports car can surely afford something with a bigger engine so why buy the alfa?

Bigger engine does not mean more fun.

It's a newer Lotus Elise in my eyes.

Why do you need a bigger engine ? Better performance is not the preserve of big-engine cars.
So what's the point, then ? We are long past the age of 'bigger is better' in engine terms - even F1 is going to 1600cc cars.

It is likely that a 4C with a bigger engine would be worse than the 1750 to drive, not better. Stick a big 3L V-6 and it would sound fabulous, sure, but the 1750 would probably accelerate quicker, stop quicker and change direction quicker - because of it's weight (lack of) and it's weight distribution.

On a related note, the 4C gets 'over' 200bhp from it's 1750cc. My 2003 TT at 1781cc is 225bhp. Still good............but my TT weighs 1465kg iirc, whilst the Alfa is only 850kg.......

Look at Lotus'......as I think Colin Champion said " just add lightness".

OP - if you can, buy the 4C now. There's only going to be 3,500 made. The idea that a second hand one could be picked up in a few years time is a bit fanciful. As for a new Spider....I'd love to believe it's happening, but it's far from certain.

Like I said, I have my name down for a new 4C... But, I am more likely to go for the spider at the moment. The roads here are mostly 6-8 lane highways, and the 4C isn't going to be as much fun as it would be in Ireland.

If you read my original post, you will see that they are already testing the Alfa power plants in the new chassis... The likelihood of the spider not going ahead are slim to none.

I could probably afford to finance the spider relatively comfortably and it is probably going to be more suitable to where I live. The 4C is definitely doable, but would put me under financial pressure, and while it will be great fun to own, I'm not sure about it as a daily driver here in the desert...

I think it is very likely - Mazda will certainly produce a new MX-5, and the Spider will just swap in a more powerful engine and an Italian leather cabin.

Maybe it'll even rust like a proper Italian car!

I sat in the 4C Launch Edition yesterday, played with its bits, started the engine... This is really a fantastic car. I'll have to wait till this time next year to actually drive one, as they is when the deliveries of the standard edition start to arrive.

I was impressed with the build, as I wasn't expecting it to fit together as well as a metal bodied car, but the carbon fiber was great. The seats are allot nicer in reality than pictures... I'm 6'3", but sat in comfortably... Not sure how comfy I'd be after a 6 hour drive, but I'd get there allot faster...

I have a nice hardback brochure, in a cool box & waiting for an insurance quote. Having said that, I'll probably still wait for the Spider, purely based on cost...
