    I'm looking at a few 2013 Audi A4s.....

Are there major differences in these engines apart from the extra power:

    Audi A4 2.0 Tdi 143Bhp quattro SE

    and

    Audi A4 2.0 Tdi 120HP

Any hidden issues, pros & cons of either engine?

    Thanks for any input.

One has four wheel drive ability, the other just front wheel drive. I'd imagine there's a bit of a price difference between them.

I'd take the more powerful Quattro.

Same engines just different levels of tune.

Id go for the 143 bhp version, tge fact that it also has "Quattro" (which isnt standard by the way) is another big plus point.

Tbh, I'd have thought there'd be a bigger gap!

It's a no brainer, the more powerful, better specced quattro would be the one to go for. But for 38k I'd be looking for a more powerful engine and better spec again.

€38k is savage money for an A4 even if it has Quattro. You can get an A6 for similar money unless you really need Quattro.

Or you could go for something much better, as it's not just an overpriced Skoda.

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volvo/S60/D4-R-DES/37313753716054410/advert?channel=CARS

More powerful, better specification, nicer to drive, better fuel economy, less chance of your foot catching the foot rest every time you use the clutch, and therefore peeing you off everyday of ownership. Will lose more value than the A4, boot is smaller than the A4.

The 120 bhp A4 really isn't at the races.
A6 is 177bhp as standard although having tried a new A6 s line, I thought it was a terrible drive.

Yes, drive Volvo, or an overpriced ford as they are known........

Overpriced Ford? The only thing it has in common with Ford is the platform it's built on.

It's better than a Ford in terms of:
    - Safety
    - Comfort
    - Equipment
    - Trim Finish
    - Quality

I have an A6 (its a lovely drive) and if I had a choice of quattro I would have taken their hand off in the dealership, i bought nearly new, so there wasnt any there. Deffo the quattro, but 143bhp is really not great for it.

OP - Quattro is not a good thing for everyone, and is certainly not always worth paying more for. Yes the extra traction is worth it for some, but there is also a penalty in cost, weight, and therefore performance and fuel consumption. You need to decide whether it's worth it for you.

Comfort, economy and style are my priorities. I agree 120bhp isn't going to quicken my pulse but if the 2.0 TDI is a reliable engine with no hidden vices, that's how I'm thinking. Quattro would have appealed to me 20 years ago but nowadays, I'm a sedate driver who likes his comforts :)

Looking at carzone it seems to have feck all comforts either. Coupled with dismal performance I'm not sure what your 35 grand is buying you.

And what extra comforts would you be wishing for above & beyond what an A4 2.0 TDI already has? Regarding performance, well I'm not a speed merchant and I'm happy to drive around 100kph most of the time, law permitting.

For me a premium brand should be automatic with leather seating at an absolute minimum. Other things such as parking sensors, automatic wipers, lights, keyless entry have trickled down to a lot of brands small cars now - not even the highest spec. Heated seats are great too but I wouldn't have them as essentials.

Some of the Audi/VW DSG automatic boxes have reliability issues, especially the DQ200 7-speed. I had a Golf GTI mkV DSG 6speed once though and it was a great car to drive.

In a new Audi A4 I think the automatic is the Multitronic which doesn't get a great press though, so I'd stick with manual there.

As for leather....I could never stand it for some reason. I wouldn't pay anything extra for it - much prefer the feel of a fabric seat, don't ask why - it's just me:)

I suppose extras in a new car mean different things to different folks.

Fair enough, but it's an awful lot of money to me and I'd rather go down a few years and get the toys. I'd be similarly nervous of VAG automatics. One thing you have to give them is they know how to bleed their customers. The amount of options are crazy. They dont leave any money on the table. Much prefer the likes of Jaguar or Lexus where you've 3 or 4 trim levels and maybe one or two options on top of that.
