Brushing off a bit of paint to make sure we have a clean and tight ground here.

    Nice upgrade.
Looking to upgrading front speakers on a -04 E46
    Probably wont run an amp.
Would prefer to keep it as oe as possible
Will most likely use silentcoat on the doors at time of replacement.

Was thinking Pioneer ts-e170ci as I read they are a good upgrade.
Did look at herts but read they are a bit bright?

No idea about focals, I do know they are top speakers though.
How did this sound when finished?
    did you do soundproofing?

    Cheers

For e46 I would recommend you Gladen One 165

If Pioneer were that good I would be using them. But they are not.
Focal are very good, like any other top brand out there, the difference between those speakers is hard to tell. Some would sound more musical etc.

Keep in mind, if you fit top quality speakers like Gladen, Focal, Morel etc, they will sound good, but your radio will not be able to drive them properly.
Without proper power there will be distortion at mid volume or so.
A good amp will not only give them the power they need to pulse the way they were designed to, but the sound quality will also improve, not just get louder.

Yes we damped those doors too, mandatory really for any speakers job

Were you not worried about the amp overheating in that location?

Not really this is a tiny class D 2 channels amp that provides little power to the front speakers only. These barely get warm at high volume for a while.
I asked the owner to keep an eye on it after a trip.

I'm always nervous of amp location because I nearly burned out a vw golf with a poorly mounted DLS CA50 a good few years back. The new Class D's are great though, my JL HD900/5 gets a right thrashing but gets lukewarm at worst!

    Nice clean job btw

I understand about amping good quality speakers.
This is why he was looking at something like the pioneers/Alpines to run off the original headunit for now as he wants to leave that in if possible.

Maybe I can twist his arm :P

    Thanks
    PS
I would also feel concerned about heat from that amp in the golf..:o
