    Hi everyone,

We're in desperate need of a broadband engineer/technician. We're with vodafone but we reckon we have an internal wiring issues maybe caused with our monitored alarm or sky hd box that is affecting out broadband speed significantly. We live out in the country so so our connection speed has always been slow with the exchange rate but its getting worst and it happened after we got out alarm system serviced.

Does anyone know any good third party broadband technicians in the Wexford area? Thanks in advance:)

Who install your Alarm are you using eircom phonewatch
Did you tell installer you have Vodafone broadband in use
You must have with alarm a broadband splitter fitted and should have been done with install
Are you using ADSL Micro Filter if not you need to be using one if above not done

Hi Paul thanks for your reply. JohnJoyce security installed our alarm. No we never had the sense to tell them we are using vodafone broadband. Yes initially we had 2 micro filters, one for the phone line and the other for the dsl cable but the last eircom engineer that came a few months ago removed that and put in a small box on the wall where 2 wires fit in, one for the phone and the other for the dsl. So im guessing we have no use for filters anymore.

Ask them to come back and put one one and if you still have an issue after that then get the engineer on site.

If you have a tech install point(which by your description you do) then you wont be hit for a callout fee. Just get them to send a tech again, there's probably a line fault he didnt bother fixing.

Hi Nody I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean I should contact my alarm provider to check it out?

Okay I might do that then. The last time we had a line fault Vodafone arranged an eircom engineer and it set us back €100 but he stated that he established that there wasn't an eircom problem on the line but that they might be an internal problem. So thats why I would be more inclined to get a third party engineer that can really check things out. We have such a big house and there's pretty much a phone socket on every remove although the only one in use is in the kitchen.

Like right now the connection works but its much slower than usual and it disconnects frequently.

The €100 was for the NTU fitting I assume, but what that does is prevent other devices in the home from interfering. So in theory internals shouldnt cause it.

What he fitted look something like that yeah?

Slow + Intermittent drops is a sign of a weak signal/ interference. The tech install rules out interference from devices, so its either a fault on the lines outside or a very bad short on the wiring in your house. Generally shorts dont cause DSL to drop, but can if they're severe.

Call vodafone from your mobile and just ask them to run a line test, see if they spot anything.

Wow you really know your stuff. That box is exactly what the eircom engineer fitted in. The engineer did say we are probably the last on the exchange rate so maybe its just because our phone line quality is very poor because we live out in the country in a very remote area but it still doesn't explain why the router keeps going red so often.

I call vodafone from my mobile like you said and they did a test and it came back at 6.7 which he said was quite low as it should be closer to 10. Whatever that means I have no idea. Like at best we're only getting upto 1mb and we're on a 3mb plan with vodafone because thats the lowest pack they offer.

Sounds like they just read the prequal out to you. Thats a monthly or so test and doesnt tell you a huge amount.

Login to your router(google will tell you how to get into the vodafone one yo have) and and post the line stats here(Up down attenuation and Up Down Signal to Noise Ratio etc). That'll give us an idea.

Okay. We're actually back with using the old silver eircom router for now as when we connected the new vodafone router it was working fine on all the laptops via wireless but for our main computer it wouldn't work as it was coming up as "unidentified network" so only had local access. It was very head wrecking so switched back to eircom router for now. Here is the screen shot of the settings.

That modem is ancient now and could well be the cause.

Im guessing the main computer is vista or XP? Either way whats likely the problem is an old driver. If I were you I'd update the driver on that machine then swap to the vodafone Huwaie modem. Its much more secure and will likely solve your problems.

Yeah the computer is running vista whereas the laptops are all fairly new so they work fine. Okay i will try updating the driver and see what happens. Thanks a lot

I tried updating the network adapters via the computer and internet but all came up saying i already have the most up to date drivers. I have the vodafone model back connected and its still the same story. Im currently on my own laptop typing this. iI'm guessing it must be some sort of vista bug as the computer should be connected. When I go to the vodafone broadband settings and go to service status both wifi and internet is working fine but on the computer there's no internet. Maybe I should call vodafone and see what they say but I know they will say it much be an issue with the computer.

Windows wont pick it up, the driver tool usually only finds the original release for any device.

Tenner says its an Aetheros adapter, a lot of their adapters have a WPA bug.

Anyways, what you wanna do is get the latest driver from your PCs manufacturer. To do so follow this kind of example: If it were a Dell Dimension 9200, I'd google "Dimension 9200 support.dell.com" and there you go, first result on google is this. Same will work for other manufacturers.

Okay thanks the dell page for our model, inspiron 530s came up but it couldn't analyze our system. This message came up:

"We're sorry, we were unable to analyze your system. Please return to the Drivers Home Return to "

No not using Aetheros but funnily enough someone told me that using that adapter will solve the unidentified network issue.

You dont need to use that tool. You can either find the service tag printed on a label on the case, or if you cant find that just do it manually.

The 530s doesnt have a broadcom listed but it has a Dell one http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-530s?driverId=YFD5F&osCode=WLH&fileId=2731107503&languageCode=EN&categoryId=NI

Which is likely it, if not then its :

    http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-530s?driverId=R0PJ7&osCode=WLH&fileId=2731105975&languageCode=EN&categoryId=NI

    Which is a realtek one.

Okay thanks but it will not let me install them for some reason. I took screen shots of the error message coming up. I wish I could connect the computer to the router via ethernet cable but the router is downstairs and the computer is upstairs so that's impossible unfortunately.

Get a powerline extension kit - problem solved :)http://www.vodafone.ie/home-phone-broadband/add-ons/?ts=1382541893515

Rather than posting a new thread, I thought it was best to just post here.

Anyone know any broadband engineers/technicians in the wexford town or wellington bridge area? We just need a new broadband box installed as the current one we have was damaged so right now the dsl cable is connected through the micro filter into the test hole and I don't think that's supposed to be permament.

We're with sky broadband and the connection has been very slow.
