Thought this might be an interesting tread.....

When selling a pen of cattle and selling them as singles, how do you put them through? Best to the worst, other way round or whatever way they run up the chute!? :-)

Usually evaluate animals to match up night before or if bought in sell them the way they were bought, usually let in best few first but dont think it makes much difference

worst first cause you are more likely to be unhappy with the price for these so if they sold first and all sell, it leaves ya knowing what you have to get for the better ones and. takes some of the pressure off

Prob doesn't matter though. Just allows me do my sums as I am in the box.

Best first and match them as close as possible. Don't put a bad one in with a bunch of good ones. It will put off buyers.

think we had a discussion on this before, in our local mart 90% of animals go through as singles, most people just number them as they are in the crush

    Best first.
Get as many buyers around the ring as possible to look at that one and they will be more than likely be there for your next-to-best ones after

In fairness Whelan1 unless you work in the mart at the intake crushes and/or are talking to the farmer as he puts on the stickers, you couldn't know and would only be guessing. You can only talk for yourself.

Regarding talking about this before, I don't think we have. We talked about selling cattle as singles, doubles, groups etc.. but this is not what this tread is about.

Best first. Try and set the tone!

Best first but it it usually depends on how the staff outside sort them, they may have found it easier to get the B's first rather than A's for example.

Whats the logic with best first, when I had smaller numbers I used to think that way but since numbers got bigger I leave them off and find that the animals usually make what they worth anyway in other worde when you look back at the prices you can se why some made more than others.

I go best first always gets the few lads that you want to be bidding at the ring and when your name comes up then a few local farmers would be more interested in good local, Ai bred cattle especially heifers

Best first to try and get a bit of momentum going to try and carry the poorer ones through ..

Although its one of those things that you never really know is it making a difference

Best first. If u get on well with the better ones it can make the poorer ones that bit easier to sell. Thats if the Mart guys are able to put them in in the order you have them numbered. Doesnt always happen

I think whelan is right about just sticking the no.s on them around here anyway. ive often been on the intake crush and only ever saw one lad who would be renouned for being awkward try and organise his cattle. i try to arrange that im in the earlier part of mid selling if you can work that out, (neither first or later in the sale) i dont however think it makes the slightest bit of a difference whether your first or last ones are better. you either have good or bad stock and people will either want them or not.

I'm sorry if you took my response personally. It wasn't meant that way. All I was saying was how could any of us (me included) talk about how every farmer enters his cattle. That's why I started the tread.. to find out.

Sorry to hijack the thread Muckit but responses to your question is starting to fizzle out and I dont want to start a new thread.

I have a mart related question about selling animals.

Maybe all marts are different so this question might not be relevant. Say i decide not to sell an animal because I feel I am not getting enough. How do you go about getting a re-run. I know in my local mart I often hear of fellas saying that they will re-run them later on, using if they are selling in the first pen. Do they tell the auctioneer to re-run them or do they go into the office and ask for it to be done? And do you just tell them that you want to re run them because the price is not good enough?

I'd always just say it to the auctioneer and he gives a heads up to the lads in the holding yard who'll organise them to be re-run a few lots later. The only time I've ever really done this is if I was one of the very first lots and the mart hadn't filled up yet, with only a few people around the ring when my cattle came in , hence not much bidding.

Usually tell the drovers in the yard driving the cattle from the pens to the sorting pen outside the ring. Give them a hand drawing the animal(s) in question so no mistake is made.

Yep, do the same as that and usually end up getting the same money and bringing them home bull thick anyway

Most of the sharper lads around the ring will know what the animal was making the first time round; usually the only hope is a newcomer prepared to go a bit more.

Well I don't need to worry about re running due to being in the first pin. Phone lines opened at 9 to book weans in. I got through at 9:02. Lady told me I was the first call of the day. So I was a bit worried I would be selling first.

Turns out my animals are around lot # 700. They sale starts at 300. Strange how that happened??? Wonder what time I will be selling. Think sale starts at 10

Do most marts not have a draw to see what pen goes first and the running order?

My local mart allots numbers then draws number that will start it eg you get number 50 the number drawn out is 51 it starts at 51 and goes to last number before starting at 1 so you could end up last in depending
