Hi, I failed to pay m50 toll and received a first penalty notice which i had two weeks to pay. However, I was away at the time and did not see the letter until i got back. The letter states that failing to pay penalty before the deadline will incur a €41 fine. The deadline was 10 days ago and still have heard nothing re. how to pay €41 fine and if I go onto pending penalties on eflow.ie nothing comes up. This happen to anyone before? Any advice?

Ringing them would seem like the easiest solution...

Ring them and explain what happened and that you're not willing to pay a €41 fine for a €3 toll.

This happened me before same story went on holidays and came home to 3 fines. I rang them and told them they could whistle for their money and that I was willing to pay the valid charge for tolls.

Personally I hate that they are profiting off of peoples forgetfulness, yes there are scammers who try and evade the toll but the majority is honest forgetfulness.

After a bit of back and forth they waved the fines and flagged my reg so that if I tried to evade the toll again they would issue fines and no second chances.

In fairness there are great big flashing orange signs either side of the toll bridge reminding you to pay; you cant really complain about getting a fine for late payment. And I say this as someone who has forgotten to pay virtually every time I have passed through it :pac:

Easiest solution OP is to sign up for a video account. Toll is cheaper and is billed automatically so you cant forget to pay. Plus they will probably waive the fines if you sign up for an account.

Yes but that wonderful flashing sign is as you cross the bridge. Not much of a reminder when you get home is it.

Best thing to do even if you rarely pass through is set up a video account. 50c cheaper and never have to remember to make the payment.

Is there a monthly payment you have to make even if you don't use the rip of toll.

Not on the video account. Only the tags

Just be sue to keep an eye on what they take from your account. I've been over charged twice.

I have also been overcharged twice but got it back when I rang them.

They are fairly decent to deal with once you ring them. I had forget to pay but rang a day after and they said they would cancel the fine seen as I rang.

If someone is that forgetful I think they have far bigger issues. :pac:

Where did I drive today? Oh yeah, the M50. Better pay that toll that the big sign AND the signage AND the road has printed on it AND the fact that I drove on the M50.

As opposed to I have no recollection of where I drove today?

well that's just stupid to be fair. At least the other responses had a bit of humour in them.

M50 is pet hate of mine.
I virtually always forget to pay the toll in time.
I'd say at least 80% of my M50 crossing end up with letter with 6 euro fine.
There must be something missing in my brain, because normally I don't forget things, and I consider my memory to be quite good. It's just M50.

I used to be the same. Then I subscribed to a tag. I've no idea why it took me so long but it's so easy now.

If you use the M50, even occasionally, then at least get a video account. It's cheaper and also no worries.

I use it occasionally, and usually in different vehicles.
Like I might have f.e. 5 trips a year on M50, and this will be in 4 different vehicles. Hard to arrange video account on all of them, especially that every your it's different vehicles, and some of them are company ones, which are also used by different people. I don't think video account would work for me.

Because of the nature of our business we deal with the M50 toll people on a regular basis. I have to say that when you call them the vast majority of operators are obliging and have common sense, which is more than can be said for a lot of call centres.

So I would say if you ring them up you will be able to sort things out ok.

I also had a situation a few years ago where I did a return trip through the toll which I forgot to pay for and eventually got a letter with a bill for circa €100. I decided to ignore it and see what happened and as it turned out nothing did happen. So if you decide to brave it out you may well get away with it.

You can put a bunch of different vehicles on an account. I've had a video account a few years now, with three vehicles on it. The statement provides the details of each journey: date and time, and registration number. No-brainer really. And definitely no fee to have the account (there is a fee if you have a tag).

One time, someone drove through the toll twice in one of the vehicles on my account, and weren't aware of the account so they paid €6 to cover the two tolls. That just went onto my video account as credit, reducing the balance.

Just be sure to remove a vehicle when it is sold, and to update your bank/Visa details if they change.

If you receive penalty notices while you're away on holidays, it's understandable to find this unpleasant, but they issue automatically, it's not like they know you're on holidays.

Check out tolltag.ie if you don't want to pay a monthly fee for a tag. They charge 10% extra when you use a toll road (€2.20 instead of €2 for example) but no admin charges or monthly fees etc. Have 4 tags on all the family cars (including parents cars), bill is paid by credit card automatically & it works on all tolls in Ireland. Handy if you don't use tolls much.

A video account for the M50 would probably make more sense than a tolltag to be honest; costs nothing to have the account and it reduces the cost of the M50 toll slightly. For other tolls a tag would be handy, but to be honest, if its only for occasional use then Id sooner just carry the cash rather than give them any more than I already have to pay to use the roads.

I disagree. I think the toll for a tag on the M50 currently is €2.10, so it's costing me €2.31 per trip. Cost per trip for the video account is €2.60 I believe. I'm saving almost 30 cent per trip on the M50 versus the video account & it's costing me nothing to have the account, if I don't use the roads I don't get charged.

Ah fair enough, you didnt say that it was compared to the eFlow tag rate; I thought you meant that it was 10% on top of the normal rate.

    Hi Roseend,

When you travel on the M50 the payment should be made before 8:00pm the following day to avoid an additional charge of €3.00 being applied to the original toll. If you miss the 8:00pm next-day deadline, a "First Penalty Notice" will be issued to you by post and the "Journey Reference Number" must be used when making the penalty payment. If this "First Penalty Notice" is not paid within 14 days an extra late penalty of €41.00 is charged.

If you have not received the penalty letter the penalty deadlines remain as outlined above and payment can be made over the phone. An easy way to avoid penalties is to either prepay for your trips before you travel or to register for an account with eFlow. A video account is free to set up and free to maintain, journeys on the M50 cost 2.60e and up to 6 vehicles can be covered by the account. A tag account costs 1.23e tag rental fee per month and journeys on the M50 in a car are charged at a rate of 2.10e. You can register over the phone or online here on eflow.ie- https://csc.eflow.ie/newaccount/newaccount.aspx.

If you want me to look into anything for you please PM me your details. In order to access your details securely you will need to provide me with your full name and the name and address the car is registered too and whether you are the owner.

    Kind Regards,

You have to pay a small fee every month for the tag, whether you use the M50 toll or not. So from my calculations, even though the cost of a journey is higher on the video account, if you use the M50 toll extremely infrequently, it would work out more overall to have the tag account.

Not all tags charge a monthly fee. There's a good breakdown here: http://www.moneyguideireland.com/m50-toll-comparison-of-prices-and-options.html

I have the tolltag.ie one and use it maybe 4 times a month. Works out perfectly for me
