Old car untaxed and off the road

I have an old car sitting up at home for a couple of years, not moved in over a year. I did not get it signed off by the deadline at the start of the month. So what happens now if I want to put it off the road?

I understand the car needs to be currently taxed to get it signed off? Do I need to back tax it for the last year just to sign it off now and have the option to put it back on the road at some stage in the future?

If I change ownership on it to my parents does that now wipe the year of arrears allowing me to tax it for 3 months and sign it off... or at this rate am I better just scrapping it.

If you transfer ownership to your parents, they will be able to declare if off the straight away after purchasing, without a need for taxing it. They have 10 days from date of transfer of ownership to sign in declaration.

In relation to yourself, you would only be liable for arrears if you proceed to tax that car.
So if you transfer ownership then you are not liable for anything.
