Smoke Free Campus

So two of my class reps this week were talking about the possibility of a "Smoke Free Campus", like they tried/are trying to do in UCD.

Apparently the class reps are meant to take a vote for the class and pass on the majority vote for the final vote or whatever, but one of the class reps was totally biased and made out that there was a clear majority for yes when there definitely wasn't... anyway...

Besides the stupid system of voting that's apparently being used, do ye think there's any chance of it going through?

Even as a non-smoker I wouldn't support this. They already have to go outside for a fag, so why should they go off campus?

I'd rather if they waited to see how it works out in UCD first.

The smokers are going to smoke anyway, i can see it leading to lots of people coming into classes late.
Would having designated smoking areas be a decent compromise?

I think the idea is to have a designated smoking area (possibly off campus our class rep said) which is still a bit stupid in my opinion. I doubt it'll happen.

Designated smoking areas (on campus, having them off campus is ridiculous) would work better than an all out ban, but I'd prefer if there was just a rule that you couldn't smoke at the entrances of buildings or something.

That would just mean attendances (that are often exceptionally low anyway) would completely be eliminated.....sure why go to college by the time we've had our off campus smoke the lectures started so screw it we'll just stay here........disastrous idea...be funny if it somehow passes tho

What entitlement do you have to have a cigarette in between lectures? the time between back to back lectures is intended for travel between lectures. If you make the choice to go off campus for a cigarette that's on you.

Only if you assume that every single student smokes and always takes smoke breaks between lectures.

Surely you could just manage your smoke breaks better?

I wouldnt agree with a smoke free campus but they should go to certain area's to smoke
Attendances wouldn't be eliminated and this is cert not a disastrous idea.

I don't think its a problem really. I rarely ever have to walk through smoke on campus

Its a stupid idea. They already have to go outside. Whats the point in making them go off campus?

    Its never gunna work anyway

I just don't see the point

When you smoke outdoors it dissipates very quickly and the dangers of passive smoking are none

For God's sake, if this ham-fisted effort at regulating the decisions we make as adults were passed by my class I would be righteously peeved:mad:

As a non-smoker i am completely against this.

Even designated smoking places is silly imo. Set them up and all. That would be great but again i don't think smokers should be forced to use them.

And have never had the problem of having to walk through smoke at entrances.

See this whole thing as a non issue. also would be very very hard to implement

There are various Right-Of-Ways through the campus.... good luck with that one

Okay I am a biased smoker but I think this is a terrible idea. Totally accept that it's a dangerous habit and have no problem at all with going outside, if I'm outside somewhere having a smoke (bus stops or whatever) I try to stand away from non-smokers because I have sporadically quit and I know it's disgusting to be around if you don't smoke.

But I mean, what's the scenario? Say I'm in the library studying, say it's dark outside, bearing in mind that I'm a girl and a fairly slight one at that, am I supposed to go wandering off to some distant smokers' gulag every 2 hours or so on my own? Even if I'm in the late night library and it's midnight on a Friday?

Also even if it was introduced it would be really hard to enforce, doesn't seem worth the effort. I know there are colleges that don't allow the sale of tobacco products on campus, seems like a much more reasonable way to piss smokers off?

Why does it remind me of this?
