Your childrens role model

When I was growing up my parents used Jesus as a role model to live life by, i.e. be nice to people. I am not a religious person at all but I think I benefitted from learning the basic teachings of Jesus. My parents were never hardcore with regards to religion either so I think I might use him as a role model to my children too. Him or Sam in Lord of the Rings...

Who would you encourage your children to learn from, if anyone?

The adult fella who was going on about turn the other cheek, treat others as you want to be treated and that kind of craic. I wouldnt use the Bible version wholly, just the bits that apply to reality.

Bruce Forsyth. He married a Miss World for christs sake.

Wasn't that Jesus fellow often hanging out with a hippy crowd and hookers. Sure it seems cool to you and me now but maybe not what you'd want from your kids.

Enda Kenny. My son wants to get into politics, and Enda is the leader of the country.

All credit to Cheeses in both his Happy Meal and Super-Size forms, but I am my own mentor, guru, yogi, boo-boo and sensei. The blessings of Cod be upon you, and may you never fall down scuttered drunk on top of yellow snow.

Superman. I used to climb up to the top bunk and dive onto the single bed hoping my dormant flight powers would 'kick in' and I'd fly out through the window.

Parents are the most important role models for kids. Kids don't do as they're told, they do as they see.

I hope my little man looks upon my wife and I as his role models. I didn't have much of a relationship with my old man until I grew up but his work ethic and attitude to exercise was truly inspiring and I have always used him as a benchmark for myself in those respects. He is 69 years old now and he can easily cycle a 150km sportif in under 5 hours and still have enough energy to cycle home and he was highly respected by anybody who ever worked with him.

I spend whatever time I have with my boy trying to educate him and have as much fun as possible. If I end up being his role model, I will be one happy Dad.

Hi imachunt, lovely punning there in your name.

The thing is, there can be far more than one or two role models for children. Grandparents can be role models, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, football coaches, teachers, politicians, GAA stars. All of these people can be positive influences on children. It's not 'end of' with regard to parents, is it?

I found some good came from religion class as a kid, The Good Samaritan and stuff but I don't think i'll go with the bible as my kids role model, they can learn from myself and their dad. We kinda believe we're demi Gods anyway!

I should have mentioned...I wont just hand the son a Jesus book and say 'Here, become a man. Me and your mother are off to the pub.' Im going to use some of the teachings of Jesus to explain to my kids how they should be expected to behave. I dont even have to mention Jesus really now that I think about it. Obviously Ill teach them my own things too.
