Exporting Car to Northern Ireland

I am currently living in Northern Ireland and looking at importing a 2007 BMW 530d M sport from the Republic. From the little research I've done it seems likely that I will get good valve for money on large engined pre 2008 cars. The VRT rebate for the 530d is E4k approx and a lot of the 2007 models are going cheap as people don't want to be paying e1500 road tax. In comparison the road tax in NI is £220pa.

Can anyone tell me what is involved in getting the VRT export payment and the time frames involved. Is this something that a dealer can arrange or do you have to do it yourself?

    Thanks

    More info here:

I think the car has to be registered to you down South to be applicable.

If you find the car you are looking for, go into agreement with the seller, that he can sell the car for you cheaper and he will recover VRT repayment from revenue.
It's only registered owner who can apply for VRT refund AFAIK.

A 2007 will have KM only clocks in, so you'll need to factor in the cost of getting MPH clocks installed.

You'll also need to obtain the original Certificate of Conformity (up to €100) usually from the original supplying dealer or the manufacturer/importer.

Set aside a day to fill in one of the most confusing forms I've ever seen, transcribing most of the info from the CoC (in German). Once that's done, it's relatively cheap.

In NI you need to have dual MPH/KM clocks (unlike the rest of the UK where MPH only are sufficient).
Not the hardest thing to get a sticker made up to overlay the existing markings. It will have to go underneath the plastic cover so the clocks will need to taken apart (slightly).
I've heard that some places will pass it with just MPH markings stuck on over the clear plastic, but rare enough unfortunately.

    That's very strange.
Why do they require double scale speedometres if they use imperial units on speed limits (MPH)?

It doesn't require both mph/kmph. My car is a 2011 UK import and has mph dials only. It requires mph but I'd imagine it is cheaper to put mph sticker below the existing kmph dials to conform.

Don't forget the Revenue also have a 500 euro documentation fee for exporting a car out of Ireland.

Is your car a UK import, or an NI one ?
Apparently according to EU legislation it does require both for NI. While some UK mainland cars may have only MPH dials (despite any legislation) the NI version of the MOT requires both.....probably because they are trying to comply with both Irish and UK requirements.
