FA called to investigate 'monkey' joke.

The UK is becoming the land of eggshells where you can't comment on or say anything without risk of offending someone and often not the person you were addressing.

Kick it Out the anti-racism group has asked the FA to investigate Hodgon's use of a joke with a monkey in it to explain a point to his players both of whom are black. All they are doing is high-lighting their own hyper-sensitivity and by drawing attention to a completely innocent and non-rascist comment they are only undermining themselves.

    As the player himself said:

"I don't know what all this fuss is about. No offence was meant and none was taken! It's not even news worthy!"

    What was the joke?

    The racist joke in question
“Nasa decided they’d finally send a man up in a capsule after sending only monkeys in the earlier missions,” the joke goes.

“They fire the man and the monkey into space. The intercom crackles, 'Monkey, fire the retros’. A little later, 'Monkey, check the solid fuel supply’.

“Later still, 'Monkey, check the life support systems for the man’. The astronaut takes umbrage and radios Nasa, 'When do I get to do something?’

“Nasa replies, 'In 15 minutes – feed the monkey’.”

    According to the torygraph

hardly racist. Anti-racism groups do more harm for their own cause by being overly sensitive.

    That's not racist at all

(And it's a bloody terrible joke)

It's a strange one. I wonder who leaked it and why. Somebody in the dressing room must clearly have felt that it was racist enough (the way it was told, perhaps?) to be newsworthy

That's another thing. Everything said in the dressing room seems to find it's way into the public domain pretty quickly nowadays.

All Roy said was 'feed the monkey'. What he meant was get the ball and give it to Townsend. He didn't state the full joke which is why it has been taken out of context

Fuss about nothing, but still a bit dumb by Hodgson

And the reference is pretty obscure to be honest

It's an absolute farce. Some Show Racism the Red Card guy on SSN now saying it highlights the need for managers to get more training.

Shambles. Should Roy have said primate instead of monkey?

Hodgson should know better but he's never been the brightest.

The FA have banned players without any firm evidence of racism so there is no doubt they on a crusade to stamp out even a wiff of racism. Stupid from Hodgson.

This is the stupidest thing. Basically you can't say the word monkey around a black person anymore. The joke's not racist and what he said wasn't racist.

On the contrary, I always took him to be more of the cerebral managers around.

He must be absolutely sickened by this, it casts a shadow over what was previously a good week for him

Nevermind that, you cant say the word "black" around a black person anymore.

Not that *they* usually mind too much...it's the lilywhite PC mama's boys thought police who want people to think they're more enlightened than everybody else.

Anybody I know who screams "racist" at the drop of a hat has only ever met a foreigner whilst getting served by them in Centra.

I think that's hilarious. I'd love to meet one of those people.
    "You can't say black person!"
"Why? Is there something wrong with being black? Do you not like black people?!"

    Or that eejit journalist

"I'm not either of those, I'm british"
"I but erm you're african american..."

Someone pulled me up one day after I made a comment about a printer being filthy black from the ink of a busted black toner. So *some people mind when you do reference a particular colour in any context.. I felt really stupid for a whole Milli-second, but its stuck in my head.

Townsend himself said there was no offense mean't and none was taken. Hodgson apologised straight away for any offense. The sun states that one player was offended when apparently nobody was offended. And now Kick it Out are demanding FA action ...

They qualified for the World Cup 2 days ago and the media have already begun to get the wheels in motion for the bi-annual English self-destruction. Unbelievable!

When I was in South Africa I was describing cultural differences between there and here to a black South Aftican and a white Dutch girl (as in she was from the Netherlands, not South African Dutch). Whatever I was talking about I mentioned the black guy was black and she looked horrified that I'd mention it.

Afterwards she pulled me aside and said I shouldn't have called him black. I looked at her confused and asked "Why? Doesn't he know?" Then to her shock I turned towards the black guy (who was across the room) and shouted "Rubin, you know you're black, right?" He laughed and said yeah and I responded with "It's not a secret, is it?". He just laughed and called me a crazy-drunken Irish man.

She, however, nearly had a stroke.

    Good times.

Hodgson should be sacked for this, in this day and age his "joke" is a disgrace

(oh how easy life would be if I was ever on the right side of the bandwagon that carries the delusional and hysterical victim classes, no matter how outlandish my claims there would be a juggernaut of special interest organisations and media columnists to support my claim, and nobody would publically oppose me for fear of being labelled racist/xenophobe/misogynist etc etc)

Is it not raciest to assume that the word monkey was an insult due to the players skin colour.

Dublin zoo should close down the primate displays cos they're rascist.

Also Curious George should be banned.

About twenty years ago now, a mate of mine was going out with a black girl from London - proper stunna. Anyway, four of us went into Riddlers in Limerick for a jar one night, and there was a big crowd in there. "Jaysis, the place is black!", says Niall. That resulted in a frosty gaze from one particular direction! :D

Exactly. I call my 2 year old a monkey all the time because she has a climbing addiction.

The English are a bit funny about racism though. I studied in the UK and made a comment one day about looking like a golly after my hair had gone frizzy from a shower of rain. You should have seen the look of horror I got.

    Course you can.

    Nevermind hyper-sensitive eejits.

People get very worked up about someone even mentioning skin colour. There's nothing racist about describing someone as black.

    It's a description.

"That black guy at the bar is going to buy us all drinks." = fine.

"All them blacks are terrible." = not fine.

And it's not even the use of the word 'black' that makes it not fine - it's the racism behind the statement.

    My 'theory' on this...
these organisations (show racism the red card and the society for black lawyers et al) try to sensationalise trivial matters, screaming racism- even though there was no racism. This is done so they can get air time to promote their organisation and further their career. They hope that they'll be called one day to set up/be part of a task force for the FA/government to tackle the 'problem' - with the included big fat pay cheque.

Could you imagine the reaction if there was a society for white lawyers? The world would explode with people fighting each other to be the first to denounce the organisation.

    This world is gone bonkers.

Most law societies (in the UK) have predominately white memberships. Back in the 1960s, when the Society of Black Lawyers was established, they were almost exclusively white

Really? Seriously? Surely you can read the joke and see the point that he's trying to make?

He's saying that the existing plan (pass the ball to Townsend who will create the chances) is working so the other ten players shouldn't worry about stealing the limelight and just carry on doing what has got them there so far.
