Reccomendation Request

    HI All,

After reviewing the resort guide thread, multiple DIY threads and trawling through Fattes post history i am still going to post a new thread requesting suggestions on where to go.

A couple of things i would ideally like:
    • Not go anywhere i have already been.
    • Not be pushed and shoved by rude (won't name specific nationalities) skiiers/boarders. Livigno and Andora were excellent in the fact that we never queued for more than 1 minute during either week.
    • Resort caters for timid intermediate skiiers (other half)
    • Resort caters for (just about) red run confident snowboarders (myself)
    • Airport transfer is less than 3 hours.
    • Snow sure - going in mid-end Jan.
    • A good size ski area which will keep me interested for a week
    • I'm not mad about doing big drinking sessions at the end of the night but don't want to end up in a ghost town either.
I've been to and don't want to go back to:
    Mayhofern/Andora/Livigno

I don't want to go to:
Chamonix - i would only fo to Cham when we're both at the level where we could enjoy it.

Totally open to suggestions. i did have my eye on Les Arcs (1800). I read about St Anton but some of the online comments talked about Blues that were very challenging which wouldn't suit SWMBO.

St Anton will be busy, too boozy for your liking and pistes aren't great

Maybe somewhere in the Dolomites? Think they might be a bit flat for boarders though?

There must literally be hundreds of places you could go though and I'm sure Fattes will be along shortly to give you a shortlist of eight

Peace: Have a look at Saalbach in Austria, Or St Gervais in in France both should tick most of your boxes

I love Westendorf in Austria, haven't skied anywhere else in the 5 years since I took it up. I'd say the skiing would be grand for your standard(s) and the town/village itself is nice. About an hour and a half to get there, and the slope is on your doorstep, no bus journey every morning.

Go to Soll!! Fits everything you're looking for, and as long as it's not school holidays the lifts should be fine.

There are nice blues for your other half, if she's in ski school she'll be well minded and might even progress to gentle reds. There are plenty of red runs for you- I know people go on about it not being perfect for boarders blah blah but there's PLENTY for an intermediate like yourself. It's the Skiwelt for God's sake- loads to keep you occupied!

Lots of good apres ski and nice restaurants, and if you get out of there before midnight you avoid the madness! Night ski is fab too, or toboggoning lol!

1.5-2 hour transfer, fly either Ryanair to Salzburg or Aer Lingus to Munich. I say do it ;-)

(Just don't do school holidays- it WILL be very busy then)

Have a google, and let us know what you decide! :-)

Snow sure - going in mid-end Jan.

You obviously missed this when reccomending Soll :D:D:D

There will be plenty of snow in Soll at that time Fattes! I actually missed that in the original post, but that's a great time to go! And hundreds of snow canons to compensate for low altitude if the snowfall does turn out to be poor.

Have a look at the past reviews for January & make up your own mind ;-)

With the exception of Hohe Salve everything in the ski welt is under 1700m, that makes it incredibly prone to weather(Temp rises) and bad snow. The problem with the ski welt is if the weather is bad it tends to be bad across all of ot with no easily accessible glacier back up.

Soll is what it is a decent beginners resort with mild terrain and one of the worst snow records in the alps It's average in mid Feb is 159 at top and 80-90 at bottom which is about 1/2 the average of say Mayrhofen

There is a reason the have near 100% coverage with cannons in thee ski welt it's because their snow record is so poor. Snow making is expensive and resource intensive for resorts and they don't do it unless they have too

Now in the right thread ;)

Oh Fattes, are you just trolling now?! Of COURSE the snow cannons are there because of their snow record- they wouldn't invest all that money otherwise. Almost 100% coverage is a pretty impressive response in fairness to them! But there will be plenty of snow in mid-January either way, and the reds and blues will be blasted with snow cannons if any issues.

Peace said he posted here because he'd read all your posts and wanted different info, so that's what I gave. A different opinion to yours. Soll is my second home, which I why I post about it on these threads and not any other resorts (except maybe Norway), but I notice every time I do you're on a few minutes later to criticize what I've said. you clearly don't rate Soll as a resort, which is fair enough, but thousands of people every season clearly disagree on that, and it's those people I'm responding to. I skied Soll last season from the beginning of December until mid-April, and there were no issues with snow. It's never 100% guaranteed, but with the snow cannons it's pretty much guaranteed as long as the temperatures are low, and this poster is not looking for off-piste info, he's looking for blues and reds, mid-range nightlife and an easy transfer time. Soll fits that criteria.

Peace, I hope you have a great time wherever you end up. Fattes, off you go now and ski wherever you want to, but stop p1ssing all over poor Soll! You know you're doing it an injustice- that witch is gonna kick your arse next time you're back ;-)

I am pissing on nothing just offering balance and facts without any vested interest! I am pretty sure I have never mentioned my favourite resort on here as it would probably not suit most people’s options plus I want to keep it a secret! . I have recommended Soll / Skiwelt but always with the caveat of its snow record, the only major tourist ski resort in Europe with lower averages than the Ski welt is Andorra!

The snow record in Soll is not my opinion it is the average snowfall record as published by the resort itself and it does not compare favourably to some of its peers. According to Snow-Forcast.com and SkiClub.co.uk historical snow records, Soll and the Ski welt are what they are pretty good spots for absolute beginners or maybe 2nd week trips. Will there be snow there in January, yes chances are there will the quality or quantity of that snow is a different matter.

OoooOOhhhh! It's alright Fattes, no need to get your knickers in a twist. It's only a few snow cannons :-)
