Post Primary Teaching... Realistic?

    Hi All,

I would really appreciate if some one could give me some advice on Art teaching at post primary level.

I am aware that Art is a niche subject however I would like to get some feedback as to how Art teachers are fairing out in relation to picking up hours at post primary level.

I would really appreciate any feedback on this whether it be how many art teachers are in your school / any art teachers you know etc. Have some people gotten lucky with niche subjects and managed to pick up 22 hours a week?

Also what is the rate of pay for qualified teacher on part time hours and what implications does it have on claiming job seekers allowance when you are not working? Can this be claimed during mid term breaks and all of the summer holidays?

I am a lone parent therefor my decisions will not only affect myself. In other words I need to make an informed decision.

I think this is an excellent forum to gain feedback from people in the sector.

Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

I think you got responses on the exact same thread you started last week asking almost the same thing in relation to picking up hours.

In relation to pay go onto the ASTI or TUI websites and you will find the pay scales for secondary teachers or even type that into google and you will find it.
As for the pay rate on part time hours take whatever is the full rate and divide it by however many hours you think you will get. Full hours I'm sure you are aware is 22, so 11 would be half pay etc. basically.

If not working you can claim and if subbing you can claim on and off for those days not worked

Hi Seavill, thanks for getting back to me.

Yes, I did post similar thread...however I only received one response...I'm hoping to get more feedback from people that work with art teachers or from art teachers themselves.

Thanks for advice on salary. It seems *quite* confusing but I will print out info and read thouraghly.

If anyone else would have opinion on art teaching I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks
