Can anyone recommend me an effective abs workout I can do in my living room?

Planks. Just increase how long you can hold that position for then start putting stuff on your ass (you can add weight to the planks as well... boom boom)

Are sit-ups still an effective abs workout?

If you replace the s with a p, the i with an l, the t with an a, the u with an n, and the p with a k, then the answer is yes.

No your abs are there to prevent movement not to cause movement. The best methods of strengthening them are to use them to keep you in a good shape under tension or pressure. Situps are hip flexor tighteners and are actively bad for your spine health.

What an incredibly dull sense of humour you appear to have.

I've heard good reports about Jillian Michael's 6 week 6 pack, although its more a circuit type work out I think; strenght, cardio and core.
